Even if you have the most advanced computer and use the traditional method, the installation speed of Windows is still a headache! Is there any easy way to reinstall the system? Of course, Ghost is one of the options.

The file of Norton ghostis relatively small. You only need a master file, ghost.exe (Ghost 2002 is only more than 600 KB), and a boot disk can be mounted. Because it is a pure DOS program, it is recommended to make a boot disk and put Norton Ghost on a floppy disk. Next, let's take a step-by-step look at how to create an image file and restore the system:

  Create a primary partition Image

After running Norton Ghost, you first see the main menu. The meaning of each option is:

Local: operations between Local hard disks

LPT: operations between hard disks connected with parallel ports

NetBios: operations between network Hard Disks

Option: Set (default value is generally used)

Take a single machine as an example. Select the "Local" menu, which includes the following sub-menus:

Disk: hard Disk operation options

Partition: Partition Operation Option

Check: Check function (generally ignored)

Well, after understanding the meaning of the menu items, we can start the "reinstallation Journey.

Figure 1: Select "partition" to "image"

Select "Partition" to see the following command:

TO Partition: Partition-TO-Partition copy

TO Image: The partition content is backed up as an Image.

From Image: Restore an Image to a partition

For general users, the most commonly used is the "TO Image" in the "TO Partition" (Partition operation) (Partition content is backed up as an Image file) or "From Image" (restore From Image file to partition.

Figure 2: select the source hard disk correctly

First, use a clean boot disk To start the machine To the pure DOS mode, and execute the ghost.exe file. After the Ghost main screen is displayed, select "Local → Partition → To Image". The screen displays the hard disk selection screen, select "1" for the hard disk where the source partition is located (note that the example is a dual hard disk ).

Figure 3: correct source partition Selection

Select the partition (that is, the source partition) of the image file to be created. Select partition 1 (that is, partition C) and click OK.

Figure 4: Name an image file

Select the storage location of the image file (note that you cannot select the partition C to be backed up), and then type the image file name in the "Filename" text box, for example, "C_BAK" or "C_BAK.GHO", and then press Enter.

Figure 5: Create a partition Image

Next, Norton Ghost will ask if you need to compress the image file. "No" indicates that No compression is required. "Fast" means that the backup can be performed in a small proportion, but the backup can be executed quickly; "High" adopts a High compression ratio, but the backup speed is relatively slow. Generally, "High" is selected. Although the speed is a little slow, the hard disk space occupied by the image file will be greatly reduced.

After all the preparations, Norton Ghost began to create the image file "C_BAK.GHO" for you. Based on my experience, the backup speed has a lot to do with CPU clock speed and content capacity. Generally, 64 MB memory can reach 71 MB/min, and I use about 2 GB of C drive, it takes about 10 minutes. To avoid accidental file deletion, it is best to set the attribute of this image file to "read-only ".

  Restore the primary partition Image

Through the above work, we have backed up an image file named "C_BAK.GHO" on drive D. If necessary, you can follow the steps below to quickly restore the original face of drive C.

Figure 6: select the source Image File

Run Norton Ghost, select "Local → Partition → From Image" From the main menu (note that this is the "From Image" item), and select the primary Partition Image file C_BAK.GHO From disk D.

Figure 7: determining the source Partition

Select the partition to be restored from the "C_BAK.GHO" file. Here there is only one image for the C partition, so select the partition directly.

Figure 8: select the target hard disk

Select the target hard disk to restore the image, which is generally the primary hard disk.

Figure 9: Determine the target partition

Select the target partition C in the target hard disk where the image is to be restored. Note that the target partition must not be selected incorrectly. Otherwise, the consequences are unimaginable.

Finally, Norton Ghost will ask you again if you want to perform the Restoration Operation, and warn you that if you do so, all the data on the target partition will disappear, click "Y" to start the restoration operation. The time is roughly the same as the time used to create the image. After the recovery is complete, Norton Ghost will recommend that you restart the system as prompted. Soon a clean and perfect basic system will reappear in front of you.

  Notes for using Norton Ghost

1. Place Norton Ghost on the boot disk;

2. Set the hard drive mode correctly so that your hard drive can work in Ultra ATA/33/66 mode, making image files faster;

3. Try to keep the image files clean and basic ". The more applications are installed, the more serious the system is to be modified, and the more error the new software is to be installed. Therefore, do not install too many applications before creating image files;

4. When the image file is restored, all the original data on the target disk is overwritten, and no reverse deletion method can be used.
