12.3 Overlay and formatting
12.3.1 Media Options
Consider whether to overwrite the existing backup set or format the media set at the time of the backup.

12.3.2 Append or Overwrite options
Append or overwrite these two options to select only one of them.
(1) Append to now backup set
Appends the backup set to the existing media set and retains all previous backups.
T-SQL Example: with Noformat, noinit
(2) Overwrite all existing backup sets
Replaces all previous backups on an existing media set with the current backup.
T-SQL Example: with Noformat, INIT
(3) Check media set name and backup set expiration time
If you back up to an existing media set, you can also require the backup operation to verify the name and expiration time of the backup set.
T-SQL Example: with MEDIANAME = N ' Mymediaset '
12.3.3 formatting options
This option initializes to create a new media set and clears all backup data from the original media set.
The initial process makes the following changes to the backup media:
(1) Delete the old media set header (if present) to effectively remove the previous content from the backup media.
(2) Write a new media header to each backup media (tape or disk file).
After initialization is complete, each backup media contains media headers for the media set and can begin receiving backup content. With the header, the backup operation backs up the specified data to all backup media for the media set specified for the operation.
Note: If a backup media is originally part of another media set, you must initialize the media header of the backup media with this option to create a new media set.
Options
(1) New Media set name
You can enter a new name for the media set, as needed.
(2) New Media set description
Depending on your needs, you can enter an appropriate description for the new media set.
T-SQL Example
With FORMAT, INIT, mediadescription = N ' My new media set for backup ', MEDIANAME = n ' mymediaset '
Tips:
With formant is the format of the entire media set;
With Init is to overwrite all the backup sets inside the media set without touching the media set.
