Understanding Shared Files

Apply to: Windows Storage Server R2 Essentials

With Windows Storage Server R2 Essentials, you can store files in a location that is always available, always on, and reliable.

By default, the following shared folders exist on the server:

    • Music

    • Image

    • Document

    • Video

    • Recorded TV

Using the Shared Folders link on the launchpad, you can drag and drop files between your local computer and a shared folder to upload or download files to any of the listed shared folders. By using shared folders, you can stream music and videos on all computers connected to the server, play slideshows or recorded TV shows, or view pictures by playing a slide show.

There are several different ways to access shared folders on Windows Storage server R2 Essentials from client computers that connect to the server:

    • Windows Storage Server R2 Essentials Quick Launch Board

    • Remote WEB Access

    • Start Search

    • Internet

Windows Storage Server R2 Essentials Quick Launch Board

When you connect your computer to the server, a shortcut to the launchpad is added to the notification area of the desktop. Double-click the Launchpad icon and enter your network credentials to access the shared folder using the launchpad. For more information about the launchpad, see what is the launchpad?

Remote WEB Access

You can access shared files and folders from any remote computer through the remote Web Access Web site. On the computer that is connected to the Home server network, open an Internet browser and enter the https://< server name >/remote. By using remote WEB access, you can access music, pictures, videos, and recorded TV media files even when you are not at home. Not only can you access the files stored on the server, you can also upload, download, move, or rename the files. You can also play recorded TV shows, stream music, or play a slide show through remote WEB access. For more information about remote Web Access, see Using remote Web Access.


Start Menu

In Windows 7 and Windows Vista, click Start, and then enter the \\< server name >in the start search text box. Double-click the shared folder in the window to open it.

In Windows XP, click Start, thenrun, and then enter the \\< server name >in the open text box.
