8 things to do after installing OpenSUSE Leap 42.1

OpenSUSE Leap is really a huge leap that allows users to run a distribution that has the same genes as the SUSE Linux Enterprise Edition. As with other systems, there are some optimization settings that need to be made before you can use it to achieve optimal results.

Here are some things I did after I installed OpenSUSE Leap on my computer (not for the server). There are no mandatory settings, and the basic installation may be enough for you. But if you're looking for a better OpenSUSE Leap experience, follow me down.

Add Packman Warehouse

For reasons such as patents and licensing, OpenSUSE, like many Linux distributions, does not provide software, decoders, and drivers through the official warehouse (repos). Instead, they are provided through third-party or community warehouses. The first and most important warehouse is "Packman". Because these warehouses are not enabled by default, we need to add them. You can do this via YaST (one of the features of OpenSUSE) or the command line (described below).

Using YaST, open the Software source section. Click the "Add" button and select "Community Warehouse (Community repositories)". Click "Next". Once the warehouse list is loaded, select the Packman warehouse. Click "Confirm" and then click "Trust" to import the trusted GnuPG key.

Or add and enable the Packman warehouse using the following command in the terminal:

Zypper ar-f-N Packmanhttp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/packman/suse/opensuse_leap_42.1/packman

Once the warehouse has been added, you will be able to use more packages. To install any software or package, open YaST software Manager, search and install.

Installing VLC

VLC is the Swiss Army knife in the media player and can play almost any media file. You can install VLC from the YaST software Manager or software.opensuse.org. You need to install two packages: VLC and vlc-codecs.

If you use terminal, run the following command:

sudo zypper install VLC vlc-codecs

Installing handbrake

If you need to transcode or convert video file formats, handbrake is your perfect choice. Handbrake is in our enabled warehouse, so we just need to search for and install it in YaST.

If you use terminal, run the following command:

sudo zypper install handbrake-cli HANDBRAKE-GTK

(Tip: VLC can also transcode audio and video files.) ）

Install Chrome

The default browser for OpenSUSE is Firefox. But because Firefox can't play proprietary media, like Netflix, I recommend installing Chrome. This requires additional work. First you need to import the trust key from Google. Open terminal to execute "wget" command Download key:

wget https://dl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub

Then import the key:

sudo rpm--import linux_signing_key.pub

Now go to the Google Chrome website and download the 64-bit. rpm file. After the download is complete, execute the following command to install the browser:

sudo zypper install/path_of_google_chrome.rpm

Installing the Nvidia driver

OpenSUSE Leap is available out of the box even if you use Nvidia or ATI graphics cards. But if you need proprietary drivers for games or other purposes, you can install these drivers, but it takes a little extra work.

First you need to add the Nvidia source, and its steps are the same as adding the Packman repository using YaST. The only difference is that you need to select Nvidia in the Community Warehouse section. Once added, go to Software management > Attach and select "Attach/install all matching recommended packages".

It opens a dialog box that shows all the packages that will be installed, click on Confirm and follow the instructions. After adding the Nvidia source you can also install the required NVIDIA drivers by command:

sudo zypper INR

Installing the Media decoder

You do not need to install the media decoder after installing VLC, but you will need to install it if you want to use other software to play the media. Some developers have written scripts/tools to simplify this process. Open this page and click on the appropriate button to install the complete package. It opens YaST and installs the package automatically (usually you also need to provide the root password and trust the GnuPG key).

Install the email client you like

OpenSUSE comes with Kmail or Evolution, depending on the desktop environment you install. I'm using KDE Plasma's own Kmail, and there's a lot more to be done with this email client. I suggest you try Thunderbird or Evolution. All major mail clients can be found at the official warehouse.

allow Samba service at firewall

OpenSUSE provides a more secure system by default compared to other distributions. But it also requires a bit of setup for new users. If you are using the Samba protocol to share files to the local network, you will need to allow the service at the firewall.

Open YaST and search for Firewall. In the firewall settings, go to "allowed services" and you will see a drop-down list under "services to allow" allowed. Select Samba Client, and then tap Add. Add the "Samba server" in the same way. After you've added them, tap next, then tap done, and now you can share files and access other machines from your OpenSUSE via your local network.
