8.3 Configuring processor Properties

8.3.1 Viewing the Processor tab

Switch to the Processor tab to view the current processor configuration.

8.3.2 Processor Options

The Processor tab allows you to configure the following parameters.

Automatically set processor affinity masks for all processors

This option is enabled by default. If you disable this option, set it manually in the Processor association list.

Automatically set I/O affinity masks for all processors

This option is enabled by default. If you disable this option, set it manually in the I/O Association list.

Processor Association list, I/O Association list

The Processor Association list can assign the processor to a specific thread to eliminate processor reload and reduce thread migration between processors.

The I/O Association can bind SQL Server disk I/O to a specified subset of CPUs.

The two parameters above require setting the affinity mask and affinity I/O mask options in the Advanced configuration, respectively.

Maximum number of worker threads

The default setting is zero, which means that SQL Server is allowed to dynamically set the number of worker threads. For most systems, this is the best setting. Depending on your system configuration, setting this option to a specific value can sometimes improve performance.

This parameter requires the max worker threads option to be set in the Advanced configuration.

Elevate the priority of SQL Server

Specifies whether SQL Server should run with a higher Windows scheduling priority than other processes on the same computer.

This parameter requires the priority boost option to be set in the Advanced configuration.

Using Windows fiber (light pool)

A thread that uses Windows fiber instead of a SQL Server service. This option is available only for Windows 2003 Server operating systems.

This parameter requires the lightweight pooling option to be set in the Advanced configuration.
