A senior player chatted about interesting things related to linux.
GuideA long time ago, there was no Linux system. No! It never exists before. Unlike today, Linux systems are everywhere. At that time, there were Unix systems of various genres, Apple operating systems, and Microsoft Windows operating systems.

For example, in Windows, many of its things have changed, but more things remain unchanged. Although it has added more than 20 GB of ghost to know what it is, Windows remains unchanged (except what it actually does at the DOS prompt ). Hey, do you still remember the Gorilla. bas game that appears in the DOS system? What a wonderful time! However, the Internet will not forget that you can play the Flash version of this game on the Kongregate.com website.

The Apple system has also changed, from a friendly system that encourages you to hack to a pretty, compact box that never lets you open, and also limits the hardware interfaces you use. April 1998: the floppy disk is missing. April 2012: the optical drive is gone. The 12 inch MacBook only has a single USB Type-C interface, which provides interfaces for power supply, Bluetooth, wireless NICs, external storage, video output, and other accessories. If you want to connect multiple peripherals at a time, you have to carry a bunch of adapters. This is really crazy! Then it's the headset Jack's turn. That's right. The only non-proprietary standard hardware interface in the Apple world is doomed to disappear. (Fortunately, although there is no headphone jack on the latest iPhone 7, there is still a new Macbook)

There are a lot of other operating systems, such as Amiga, BeOS, and OS/2. If you want to, you can find dozens of operating systems. I suggest you find it. It is too easy to find it. Systems such as Amiga, BeOS, and OS/2 are worth noting because they have powerful functions, such as 32-bit multitasking and advanced graphics processing capabilities. However, the impact of the market has defeated the powerful system performance. Therefore, Apple and Windows operating systems that are not technically superior have dominated the market, and those systems have gradually disappeared.

Then the Linux system appeared, and the world changed accordingly.

First computer

The first computer I used was Apple IIc, which was around 1994. At that time, the Linux system was just three years old. I borrowed it from a friend. It's not easy to use. So I spent nearly $500 on a second-hand Tandy computer. This is a sad thing for people who sell computers, because the cost of new computers is double. At that time, the computer depreciated very quickly. The computer looked like a monster at the time: an Intel megasx CPU, 4 MB memory, a 107 MB hard disk, 14 inch color CRT display, running MS-DOS 5 and Windows 3.1 systems.

I have opened the poor monster countless times and reinstalled Windows and DOS systems multiple times. Because Windows desktop is rarely used, most of my work is completed in DOS. I like to play Bloody and violent video games, including Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake, and Heretic. Ah! Beautiful, exciting 8-bit images!

At that time, hardware development lags behind software, so I often upgrade hardware. Now we can buy any computer that meets our needs. I have not updated any of my computer hardware for many years.

Bit magazine

Back in those glorious times, computer shops were full of streets, and finding a local network service provider (ISP) didn't have to go all over the block. ISP was really unusual at that time. They were not the super big companies that were cool-discussed, but good friends like American telecom operators and cable TV companies. They are extremely friendly and provide a variety of additional services such as BBS, file downloads, and MUD (multi-player online games.

I spent a lot of time buying accessories in a computer store, but many times when I went there, a female would surprise the staff in the store. I was speechless, how can this make some people feel uncomfortable. I am a 58-year-old guy, but they still don't like me. I hope my female computer fan will be accepted by them before I die.

The shelves of those stores are full of bits. Historical publications about bit magazine can be found in the Internet archives. Bit magazine is a local free newspaper with many excellent articles and advertisements on computer science. Unfortunately, there was no online version of the advertisement at that time, so we could no longer see valuable details about the computer. Do you know how crazy advertisers are today? They complained that those who installed the ad filter turned tech news into disguised advertisements. They should learn about the previous advertising model. At that time, there was a lot of valuable information in the advertisement and everyone liked to read it. I learned all about computer hardware from advertisements in bits and other computer magazines. Computer purchaser magazine is a good learning material, with hundreds of pages of advertisement and many high-quality articles.

Paul Harwood, publisher of bit magazine, started my writing career. My first computer-specialized article was published in BIT magazine. Paul, it seems that you are always by my side. Thank you.

In the Internet Archive, classified advertisement information about bit magazine is hardly found. The classified advertising model once brought huge revenue to publishers. Craigslist, a free classified advertising website, is the top player in this field, and it also kills traditional newspapers and publishing-dominated magazine industries like bit magazine.

Some of my most memorable memories are the cool-running girl of about 12 years old. His face is filled with disdain and incomprehensible expressions for the work I have done by a glamorous woman, he moved around in my favorite computer store and handed me a bit magazine as a good book for beginners. I opened the magazine and pointed to one of my articles about Linux. He said, "Oh, I understand ". His awkward face turned into a color that was physically impossible to present, and he threw his tail away in a rush. (No, my dear honest reader, he is not really only 12 years old, but he should be 20 years old. He should be more mature and sensible now than before !)

Linux

I learned for the first time that the Linux system was in BIT magazine around 1997. Some Linux operating systems I started to use were Red Hat 5 and Mandrake Linux (Mandela grass ). Mandrake is really amazing. It is the first easy-to-install Linux system with a graphical interface and sound card driver, so I can play the Tux Racer game right away. Unlike most Linux fans at that time, I had never been familiar with Unix systems before, so it was hard for me to learn. But everything goes well, because everything I learned is useful. Compared with my experience in Windows, most of the things I learned in Windows are futile, and I can only give up returning to DOS.

IT was so fun to play computer games. Later, I became a computer freedom consultant to help IT departments of some small companies migrate data to Linux servers, this makes Windows more or less useless. In general, we secretly do this work, because Microsoft called Linux a cancer during that period, and slander the Linux system as a communist, A conspiracy to weaken and swallow the precious blood in our bodies.

Linux wins

I have been working as a consultant for many years and have done other related work, such as computer hardware repair and upgrade, wiring, system and network management, there is also a hybrid network running on Apple, Windows, and Linux systems. Apple and Windows are deliberately incompatible with each other, so these two systems are really the biggest headache and the most difficult to integrate into the same network. But the most interesting thing about Linux and other open-source software is that there are always some people who can handle compatibility issues between these vendors.

Now it is quite different. There have been some compatibility issues in the interoperability between systems, and there is no Level 1 OEM for Desktop Linux systems. I think this is caused by the strong monopoly of Microsoft and Apple in the retail industry. Maybe they have helped us a lot, because we can get better services and higher-performance systems from independent Linux system developers like ZaReason and System76. They are very professional in Linux and welcome users like us.

In addition to having a place in the desktop edition System of the retail industry, Linux occupies a major position in all aspects, from embedded systems to supercomputer and distributed computing systems. Open-source technology holds the development direction of the software industry. The development of all cutting-edge technologies in the software industry, such as containers, clusters, and AI, is inseparable from the support of open-source technology. From my first old-fashioned javassx computer to the present, Linux and open-source technologies have made great progress.

Without a Linux system or open source, this is impossible.
