All definitions and functions of ADSL Modem settings

In the existing broadband Internet access methods for domestic users in China, the proportion of ADSL is probably the majority, and even many small offices share the Internet through the ADSL leased line, the speed at which telecom service providers in different regions provide users varies. Generally, local telecom operators will set the speed limit for the ADSL line (generally 1 Mbps downstream speed and kbps uplink speed are the most common, in the author's region, the average monthly subscription user downstream speed is 2 Mbps, And the uplink speed is 512 Kbps ). In addition, the access method is different. In some regions, the dialing method is used (most commonly seen in PPPoE dialing), and in some regions, the static address is used. Generally, we need to use an ADSL Modem (Ethernet interface, USB interface, or card-type modem) to access the Internet. The Modem is usually set and debugged by the telecommunications staff, basically, you don't need to do it. You only need to turn on the power when using it. If it is in the dial-up access mode, you only need to dial the number in the computer.
However, during daily use, we often encounter various problems, such as the sudden failure of the computer to access the Internet and the loss of the set value of the ADSL Modem, are you waiting for the service personnel of the telecom company to come to the door for maintenance, or are you automatically solving these small problems? In other words, we can see that ADSL in other people's homes can also be connected to the Internet just like the residential fiber-optic broadband, but why do we need to dial up first? In addition to using an ADSL Modem as the access device for Internet access, is there any other function? In general, how do new users use the advanced functions provided by ADSL Modem?
These problems may be difficult for network veterans, but general users are not professional computer operation or maintenance personnel, they are still unfamiliar with many advanced functions or some professional words in ADSL Modem. In this article, I will introduce you to the detailed configuration process of ADSL Modem, with a large number of images to guide you step by step to learn how to configure your own ADSL Modem. In addition, the author will introduce how to use the advanced functions provided by ADSL Modem to enable it to act as a DHCP server in our small network, automatically dial up or limit users' access to the Internet, content filtering. In addition, after users access the Internet, we will introduce how to enhance the security of our ADSL Modem to defend against external attacks. While introducing the various configuration options of ADSL Modem, the author does not simply list some technical terms for you, But integrates the application of some instances, the functions and functions of each option are described in detail. Once again, this article is not intended for users who are skilled in network operations, but for those who are common family users or new users. Because the configuration of ADSL Modem involves a large number of options, parsing these options takes a lot of space. To make this article easier to read, this article will be divided into multiple parts. First, we will introduce the preparations before configuring the ADSL Modem, and then the two common methods for configuring the ADSL Modem, finally, we will take a specific product as an example to describe in detail the meanings and methods of setting options for each part of the product. When introducing various options, we will introduce the options by group based on the functional menu on the setting interface for the sake of intuition.
Next, let's start preparing for configuring the ADSL Modem.
Preparations
Although there are many different brands and models of ADSL Modem on the market, in general, each modem using the same processing chip has the same settings, the difference is only slightly different in the interface or some small functions. In addition, we only need to know the specific settings of one of the products for different manufacturers, different models, and completely different processing chips, the others are actually roughly the same. Some of the projects you set are just name changes.
According to the products that I have come into contact with, in the terminal ADSL Modem devices used by low-end home users, most of the products used by users, such as Huawei, Shida, TP-Link, and Asus, are waiting for the processing chips used by some manufacturers of ADSL Modem. They are mainly used by some major international manufacturers, at present, the major chip manufacturers of ADSL Modem in the world include the Apollo 2 ADSL chip of ITEX and the famous Texas Instrument company (TI) the 4000R chip and conexant ADSL Modem chip of kosheng news, Globespan titanium series adsl modem chip of Globespan, and Alcatel. In the functional settings of these products, the main functions are basically the same. Therefore, in this article, I only use a specific ADSL Modem as an example to introduce you to various specific settings, we will introduce the differences in some common modem functions.
I am using a miscellaneous modem using Globespan titanium series chips. Its page settings are exactly the same as those of other modem using the same chip on the market. For the use of different versions of the chip modem, some of its configuration interfaces are all in Chinese, some are in Chinese, and some are in English. In this article, we use a part of the customized interface version to understand the meaning of the options on the English interface. It is even more difficult in the customized interface.
Before specific settings, connect the ADSL Modem to your computer or vswitch. The cable connection is simple. You only need to add a separator to connect the modem of the USB interface to the USB interface on the computer. If only one computer is used, the Ethernet interface is directly connected to the NIC, when multiple computers are used, they are connected to the vswitch, and the card-type modem is directly inserted into an idle PCIe slot. If it is a USB interface or a card modem, you must install the drivers before setting them. They are easy to set. You only need to configure several major telecom parameters, in general, there are not many advanced functions available for users, so I will not describe them in detail here. You can refer to the following content for settings.
Here, we mainly introduce the settings of the Ethernet interface modem. Generally, each Ethernet modem has a fixed lan ip address. The default IP address can be found in the modem User Manual (the factory IP address of the modem is 192.168.1.1 ). After finding the LAN address of the modem, we need to set the computer ip address used for configuration to another address in the same CIDR block as the modem LAN address. This is very simple and I will not describe it here.

After preparing the computer, ping the modem address on the computer to check whether there is any communication fault between the two. Enter:

Ping 192.168.1.1

If the result is as shown in 1, it indicates that our connection is correct.

Figure 1: ping result of correct connection

Then, we need to know some parameter values, which are the basic telecom parameters: VPI and VCI values. In the author's region, they are 0 and 35 respectively. If you are not very clear about these two values, you can call the Technical Support Department of the telecom operator to check whether these two values are correct, this is because it is used in the following configurations. If an incorrect value is entered in the options of the two values, the connection to the telecom carrier's Bureau side will not succeed. In addition, for dial-up Internet access (generally PPPoE), you also need to know the user name and password for dial-up. You can also call the technical support phone to obtain your username and password.

After everything is ready, we can start the following operations. In the next article, we will introduce two ways to set up ADSL Modem.(
