In the VMware vSphere virtualization architecture, servers can use vswitches for virtual machines. vswitches can be divided into vSwitch and vNetwork Distributed Virtual Switches.

A vSwitch is provided by the ESXI kernel. It is a virtual switch used to connect different virtual machines and management interfaces. A vSwitch can be composed of one or more vmnic. Different vswitches cannot use the same vmnic. By default, the first vswitch vSwitch0 is installed for functions such as console and Vm online. All network operations of ESXI are based on port/port group, vmnic, and vSwitch.

Three types of virtual switches can be added: one is the vswitch that provides ports for virtual machines, the other is VMkernel, which is used to connect iSCSI and NFS storage, or for vMotion; the Service Console is also used to configure IP addresses to manage esx hosts.

A vNetwork Distributed Virtual Switch combines several Virtual Switches of ESX servers into a large virtual switch. All clients are connected to this large switch, which is suitable for large-scale network deployment.

The vNetwork distributed virtual switch can maintain the network running status when the virtual machine moves across multiple hosts, so as to implement in-line monitoring and centralized Firewall Services. It provides a framework for virtual machines to monitor and maintain their security when moving between physical servers, and allows the use of third-party Virtual Switches such as Cisco Nexus 1000 v) extends common physical network functions and controls to virtual networks.

The essential difference between a standard vswitch and a distributed vswitch lies in its application scope. A standard vswitch can only be used on one physical host without any flexibility. Other hosts cannot share one vswitch. Distributed Virtual Switches (vDS) can be shared among hosts and used as virtual devices among hosts for availability. It can be used to connect a host to a virtual machine (VM ).

There are many similarities between standard and distributed vswitches. The Distributed Virtual Switch provides network connectivity between the VM and the VMkernel interface that manages traffic between hosts. A Distributed vswitch also requires a physical Nic to connect to an external physical network.

Distributed vswitches are more flexible than standard vswitches. All hosts in the cluster can use distributed vswitches, and distributed vswitches can easily add hosts to the cluster.

A Distributed Virtual Switch is different from a standard Virtual Switch configuration. It is essential that all vSphere hosts are in a cluster managed by the vCenter Server. You also need to consider which physical switch port to use to build a Distributed Virtual Machine switch. A conventional vswitch only has one physical switch port connected to the network port of the physical host. However, the physical switch ports of the distributed vswitch are also distributed. This ensures that the VMware distributed virtual switch can access the same physical network infrastructure independently of the VMware vSphere host in use.

VNetwork Distributed Virtual Switches must be defined at the data center level through vCenter. The super switches that span multiple ESXI hosts are only supported by Enterprise Plus ), it logically groups a single switch distributed across multiple ESX hosts into a "large" switch. Originally, each ESX Standard switch is configured separately, vCenter Distributed vSwitch can be centrally configured and managed at the data center level.
