With the increasingly rich application of Internet and Intranet, VOD is also gradually applied to broadband network and LAN. People are no longer content to browse words and pictures, more and more people like to watch movies and listen to music online. And the realization of VOD and audio VOD function must rely on streaming media service technology. For now, there are only two of the most popular streaming media on-demand servers, namely, Windows Media Service and real server. Here we discuss how to build a video-on-demand server in a Windows 2003 server environment. As we all know, the Windows Media service uses streaming media to transfer data. Normally formatted files must be completely downloaded to the local hard drive before they can be opened and run normally. Since multimedia files are usually large, downloading to the local area often takes a long time to wait. Streaming media Format files only need to download part of the local, and then you can download while playing. The Windows Media service supports video files in ASF and WMV formats, as well as audio files in WMA and MP3 formats.

Installation of Windows Media service

Although Windows Media Service is one of the components of a Windows Server 2003 system, it is not automatically installed by default, but requires a user to manually add it. In the Windows Server 2003 operating system, in addition to using the Windows Components Wizard to install the Windows Media service, you can do so through the Configure Your Server Wizard.

(1) When you have just installed the Windows Server 2003 operating system and entered Windows, the Manage Your Server window is automatically run. Click the Add or Remove roles hyperlink, and the Configure Your Server Wizard dialog box appears.

(2) Click the Next button in the dialog box, and the computer will begin to automatically detect all the devices, the operating system, and all network settings. The Configure Options dialog box is displayed after the detection is complete, and the custom configuration option is selected to customize the network services that you want to install.

(3) Clicking the Next button displays the Server Role dialog box, which lists all the servers that can be installed in the Server Role list box. Most of the services installed and uninstalled in the system can be selected in this dialog box.

(4) Select the Streaming media server option in the list box, and then click Next to display the Select Summary dialog box to view and confirm the selected options.

(5) By clicking the Next button, the Configure Components dialog box appears, and you are prompted to put the Windows Server 2003 installation CD into the CD drive.

(6) After placing the installation disc and clicking OK, the system starts copying files from the CD and installs the Windows Media service, and the progress bar represents the current installation progress.

(7) The dialog box will be displayed when the installation is complete, which means that this server has been successfully set up as a streaming media server.

(8) Click the Finish button to close the wizard and return to the Manage Your server window to show that the streaming media server was installed successfully.

In addition, the Windows Media service can add installations in the control Panel using the traditional Add/Remove Programs method. In the Windows Components Wizard dialog box, select the Windows Media Services check box and insert the Windows installation disc as you are prompted to install successfully.

When the Windows Media service installation completes, it is returned to the Manage Your server window. Click the Manage this streaming media server hyperlink on the right side of the streaming media server, or click Start-> Control Panel-> Administrative Tools->windows Media Services option to display Windows media Services window. All administrative work on the Windows Media Service can be done in this window.

This window introduces some basic knowledge about streaming media as a beginner's understanding of it. On the Getting Started tab, click an option in the underlying knowledge on the left to display an explanation of the item on the right.
