The wireless relay mode, as its name implies, is the function of a Wireless AP in network connection. It can achieve signal relay and amplification, thus extending the coverage of the wireless network. The wireless relay mode of the Wireless Distributed System (WDS) enables the Wireless AP to bridge and relay through wireless signals on the WDS without affecting the Wireless AP coverage function, provides a new wireless networking mode. The wireless relay technology uses the wireless relay function of AP to transmit wireless signals from one relay point to the next relay point and form a new wireless coverage area, in this way, multiple radio relay coverage point relays are formed to extend the coverage of the wireless network.

Wireless relay Mode

The wireless distribution system (WDS) creates a link between two AP devices through a radio interface. This link can relay the traffic from an AP that does not have an Ethernet connection to another AP with an Ethernet connection. WDS allows you to configure up to four point-to-point links between access points. In general, the central AP supports up to four remote wireless relay AP access modes.

Although the wireless relay mode makes wireless coverage easier and more flexible, it requires support from high-end APs. If a problem occurs in the central AP, the entire WLAN will be paralyzed and Redundancy cannot be guaranteed, therefore, the "wireless roaming mode" is the most common in applications, and this "relay mode" is used only in special situations where network cabling cannot be performed, it can be used in scenarios with open spaces and difficult to lay ethernet cables, such as large open office areas, warehouses, and docks. If the two networks are too isolated and the network signal cannot be transmitted, a relay AP is set up in the middle. This AP only acts as a relay.

At the same time, the network to be connected is too far apart, even if there are no other obstacles in the middle to block signal transmission and receiving, however, the coverage of today's network technologies and network devices cannot reach this far. In this case, we adopt the relay mode to use the relay AP for signal amplification and continuous transmission.

The LAN between buildings needs to be connected to each other. A company wants to connect all the networks of production plants, workshops, and management centers close to each other to facilitate resource sharing and unified management, to maximize the utilization of information, an independent internal LAN in the teaching building, student dormitory, and computing center on a university campus also needs to be established together, it facilitates students and teachers to access the campus network and Internet. The wireless distribution system technology can be used to connect to various local networks. When the distance is too long, the signal is weak, and obstacles are blocked in the middle, we need to use the wireless relay mode in the wireless distribution system to connect to build a network.
