Recently I want to use Django for some development in Linux, so I started to install a Windows 7 + Ubuntu dual-system for my home machine.
I used a relatively fast method that does not require too much effort, but I have to repartition the entire hard disk.
The hard drive of this machine is 1 Tb. My partition plan is as follows:
Drive C, Windows system disk, 70 GB, primary partition, NTFS format
D disk, stores general content, 800 GB, extended partition, NTFS format
Swap partition, Ubuntu Swap partition, 2 GB (same as my memory size), extended partition, Swap format
Root partition, Ubuntu system, about 40 GB, extended partition, Ext3 format
Prepare the following tools and start work
1. Download the CD images for Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.10
2. Download the Universal USB Installer for Linux LiveCD)
3. Download Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool (used to create Windows 7 boot USB flash drive, this Tool is not required)
4. At least one large USB flash drive/mobile hard disk or other storage device that can be booted.
Preparations
Using the above two tools to write Windows and Ubuntu images into two USB flash drives, the process is quite easy and I will not introduce it.
* If there is only one USB flash drive, you have to install Windows and then create a boot disk for Ubuntu.
* You can create a Windows 7 boot disk without tools: Copy all the files in the image to the root directory of the USB flash drive/mobile hard drive. If the USB flash drive/mobile hard drive contains multiple partitions, you also need to set this partition as an active partition.
Install Windows 7
Enable the Boot menu at Boot time and start from the USB flash drive. It is quite easy to install Windows 7.
During installation, delete all the original partitions of the hard disk and allocate only space to drive C. The remaining space is not allocated.
Create an extended partition
Go to Windows and start diskpart in the command line. The administrator privilege is required. Be careful when using this tool.
> Select disk 0 # select disk
> Create partition extended # create an extended partition for the selected Disk
Then open the Disk Manager and create a logical partition in the extended partition that we just created, giving it more than 800 GB.
More than 40 Gb left for Ubuntu.
Install Ubuntu
Start from the USB flash drive, install Ubuntu, and choose to install to the hard disk.
Then the system prompts that an existing Windows 7 instance is detected,
Select "Install Ubuntu and coexist with Windows 7.
Ubuntu automatically creates Swap and Root partitions in unallocated space.
Installation Complete
After restarting, you can see the startup selection menu generated by Ubuntu.
Both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.10 can be started properly.
