Our goal is to develop a high-quality, high-performance, and highly programmable ray tracing Renderer named Elvish Ray, with the same feature set as Mental Ray. I have developed a light tracing kernel equivalent to Mental Ray, a shading Language Interface Based on C/C ++, and a simple scenario description language and API, and a Renderer plug-in for 3DS MAX, although other specific features such as Global Illumination have not yet been developed, but I have designed the corresponding solution, the overallAlgorithmSet is very similar to Mental Ray. Someone may ask, is there any need for development as it is similar to Mental Ray? I think there are. First, the highly flexible programmability is not comparable to the direct grasp of core technologies. Secondly, we can have our own characteristics in some details. For example, Mental Ray does not solve the problem of Ray differentials well. We can use the latest research results to solve it, because the use of new technologies in commercial software is always cautious, and open-source software can be bold and quick. Another example is that Mental Ray does not use the CPU's SIMD and GPU's programmable capabilities for parallel ray tracing. We can take full advantage of these technologies to speed up Mental Ray. Finally, this is a question of interest and hobbies. I think interest is the biggest motive force behind our development. Achieving such a powerful and perfect Renderer is technically not a problem, mainly due to time and human resources issues.
