Enable dazzling 3D desktop effects (group chart) in Fedora8)

1. Looking back at the past many releases of Linux, I first came into contact with RedHat9.03. I first installed it in VMware of XP because I cannot correctly identify my hardware (for example, SATA hard disk or NTFS partition, the redhat9 kernel is not supported by default) and has no experience. Later, I heard that redhat didn't issue 10, and I knew Fedora. So download Fedora6 and install it on the hardware. Everything works!

1. Looking back

For many Linux releases, I first came into contact with RedHat9.03. I use the nVidia GF6600LE card, which can be well recognized by Fedora. In the future, I have tried other releases, such as openSUSE and Ubuntu. However, it feels really worse than Fedora. Because, you are familiar with the commands and settings of the redhat System (although Linux is basically the same, there are many differences between details processing and user operations ).

In the end, I used the most, and my favorite method was Fedora. However, since the emergence of the 3D desktop, I have pulled my exploration of Linux back to the origin! I don't understand why other people can implement 3D desktops, but I can't do anything! Because either Fedora7 or suse10.2 can be installed on a 3D desktop. It's not really a taste of it! Although I use Linux to learn and work, the temptation is too great!

Later, I tried many methods, including yum upgrade, downloading rpm package installation, and source code compilation... Also tried Fedora8, suse10.3, ubuntu7.1 and other versions, all of them are fruitless... Finally, almost desperate...

On one occasion, browsing the Web page was discovered by accident. On a 3D desktop, the driver must support 3D rendering! Run glxinfo | grep rend on the terminal. The result is direct rendering: No. The problem is found! A friend of mine is a notebook with integrated graphics card and an intel950 card, while intel is still very supportive of open source. It has integrated its own graphics card driver directly in each release. (You can go to the intel official website to see it, linux drivers are not available, because they are integrated ). However, my N-card is not driven by an integrated manufacturer (nVidia. It only uses a common driver made by the Fedora community. Although it can recognize the video card and enable xwindows, 3D acceleration is not supported! Go to the nvidia website to download the latest Linux driver! Installation successful! However, it must be the latest. (Because the latest driver can identify the latest kernel, and it is a nightmare to recompile the kernel smoothly !).

Run glxinfo | grep rend, direct rendering: Yes! Normally, modify the/etc/X11/xorg. conf configuration file and add Load "extmod" to the Section Module Section ". Log On again to enable the desktop effect! Perfect experience !!! Succeeded.

2. The most brilliant Desktop

However, Fedora8 only has cube by default, translucent and "bean curd effect", and has not been integrated with raindrops, flames, images, etc.

So, use yum to upgrade!

A. Add source to yum:

Fastest installation Source:

Yum install yum-fastestmirror

Add freshrpms Source:

# Rpm-vih http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/Fedora/linux/5/freshrpms-release/freshrpms-release-1.1-1.fc.noarch.rpm

Add livna Source:

Rpm-vih http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-5.rpm

Or

Rpm-ivh http://livna-dl.reloumirrors.net/Fedora/7/i386/livna-release-7-2.noarch.rpm

Add the atrpms Source:

Rpm-vih http://dl.atrpms.net/all/atrpms-package-config-104-3.rhfc5.at.i386.rpm

Rpm-vih http://dl.atrpms.net/all/medley-package-config-104-3.rhfc5.at.i386.rpm

Rpm-vih http://dl.atrpms.net/all/3rd-party-package-config-104-3.rhfc5.at.i386.rpm

After installing the rpm of atrpms, you must import the gpg key:

Rpm -- import http://atrpms.net/RPM-GPG-KEY.atrpms

Livna and freshrpms do not import GPG key any more. The gpg key import method is available in the configuration file.

As a result, the source of atrpms is not added. However, it is enough!
