At a conference in Singapore on Monday, ICANN passed the Internet domain name reform plan to allow enterprises and institutions to create their own domain names, such. apple ,. orange ,. BMW ,. coke and so on. This is one of the greatest changes in Internet history and officially announced the end of the. com era.

According to the plan just passed by ICANN, when a commercial organization applies for website registration, it is no longer limited to use only the domain names listed on the general top-level domain name (gTLDs) List, including. com ,. net and. org. Domain name suffixes are not limited to Western languages such as English, but can also be written in Chinese. After six years of discussion, ICANN reached the domain name opening agreement, which was the biggest change that was made when. com was launched 26 years ago.

1.44 million Application Service Fee

Industry observers said that major companies around the world, such as Apple, Toyota, and BMW, may take the lead in using domain names containing their own brand names as their URLs, the domain name ends. apple ,. toyota and. BMW.

Rodbeckstrom, Chief Executive Officer of ICANN, said that the application for ending the new domain name will start on January 1, January 12 next year and will end after 90 days. It is expected that some applications will be approved by the end of next year at the earliest. Currently, about one hundred and twenty organizations have publicly expressed interest in the new domain name ending plan. However, an institution will not only have to pay an application fee of $185,000 (about $1.44 million), but also comply with a number of rules to have the opportunity to get ICANN's approval to use its own domain name. ICANN explains that the application service fees will be used to pay for the implementation of the new generic top-level domain name program, and will also be used to prevent opportunistic buyers from buying new domain names at a low price and then reselling them.

The domain name can be in Arabic and Chinese.

According to ICANN guidelines, only reputable companies, organizations or public groups can apply for a new generic top-level domain name. Applications from individual or individual-specific enterprises will not be accepted.

Currently, more than three hundred domain names are allowed to end with. com. Currently, more than 94 million websites are registered with. com. Many domain names end with short names of countries or regions, such as. uk representing the UK,. hk representing Hong Kong, And. De representing Germany. Several months ago, ICANN planned to allow domain names in Arabic and Chinese to facilitate Internet users who do not understand English.

However, using the commercial brand name as the end of the domain name may cause some problems. For example, the relevant organizations should seize the domain names first to avoid falling into the hands of other organizations. It is difficult for consumers to keep their domain names in mind for brands that are not well-known and familiar to many people.
