Expert puzzles: the mystery of flying local connection icons

Most of the time, we can check the network connection status of the local system or modify the configuration of the local Internet access parameters, starting with the "local connection" icon in the system tray area, therefore, in a sense, the "local connection" icon is the "Portal" for managing the network. If the local connection icon is missing, then we cannot find the "entry" for managing the network, so that we may not be able to perform network management operations on the local system. So what measures should we take to cope with the problem of missing local connection icons? To this end, this article provides you with a detailed troubleshooting process from the perspective of practice. I hope you will receive some inspiration!

The local connection icon is missing

Recently, the organization bought a new computer and planned to install it into a Windows Server 2003 Server system to replace the old Server system. At the same time, the original old Server system was also delegated to a normal workstation for use, considering that the website address of the organization is relatively fixed, the Network Administrator intends to use the previous Internet access configuration in the Windows Server 2003 Server System. When the old Server is temporarily disconnected from the LAN, after connecting the new server to the LAN and correctly installing and configuring the new server system, the network administrator will re-Modify the IP address of the host where the old server system is located, however, when the network cable is inserted into the old server system and the system is started to run the system, a fault message indicating IP address conflict occurs, obviously, the IP address used by the old server system has been normally used by the new server system, and the old server system seems to have crashed when a conflict occurs.

No way, the network administrator had to disconnect the network cable of the old server system and prepare to modify the IP address of the server offline. However, what surprised the network administrator was that, when I log on to the old server system desktop again, the local connection icon in the system tray area is missing, so the network administrator cannot view the network connection status of the server system through this icon, of course, you cannot enter the network parameter settings window to modify its IP address.

To modify the IP address, the network administrator clicks the "Start", "set", and "network connection" commands in turn to enter the network connection List window, I was prepared to modify the IP address of the old server system. However, it was surprising that the previously displayed local connection icon suddenly disappeared. Why?

Try to reinstall the NIC Driver

Generally, as long as the server system can correctly identify the NIC device, most of us can see the "figure" of the local connection icon. Now the local connection icon is missing, is the NIC device of the old server system damaged? In this case, the network administrator immediately opened the Device Manager window of the old server system, found the NIC device, and right-clicked the target Nic device, run the "properties" command from the shortcut menu to open the attribute setting window for the corresponding Nic, as shown in window 1 ),

The window shows that the NIC is working normally. When the system can identify the NIC, the local connection icon still cannot be displayed normally. Will the driver of the NIC be abnormal? Although the network administrator can see the "figure" of the target Nic device in the system's Device Manager window, this does not indicate that the NIC Driver is working properly, this may also cause an IP address conflict in the system, resulting in an exception in the NIC Driver. To restore the NIC Driver to normal, the network administrator uninstalls the NIC device from the Device Manager, and then right-click the blank position in the Device Manager window, run the "Scan hardware changes" command in the shortcut menu, and then run

# P #

A new hardware device is installed, and the driver of the NIC device is automatically re-installed. After the NIC driver is installed, restart the old server system and enable the system desktop again, the local connection icon in the system tray area is still not displayed normally.

Start the old server system again, press the F8 function key in time during the startup process, enter the System Startup menu selection status, and select the "Last correct configuration" command, however, the problem still persists. Later, the network administrator tried to start the old Server System in security mode, but the fault still could not disappear.

Check System Service Status

Is it possible that IP address conflicts cause abnormal service status in some old server systems? Since the running status of Remote Procedure Call (RPC), Network Connections, and other system services directly affects the display status of local Connections, will these system services suddenly fail to work normally, why is the display of the local connection icon abnormal? To verify that such a guess is correct, the network administrator immediately right-click my computer on the old server system desktop and execute the "manage" command from the shortcut menu that appears, open the Computer Management window of the corresponding system, and expand "services and applications"/"services" branch options in the left-side area of the Management window, in the displayed area on the right of the corresponding "service" branch option, find the target system service such as Network Connections and right-click the service option, run the "attribute" command from the shortcut menu to open 2

As shown in the target service attribute settings window, on the "General" tab page of the settings window, the Network administrator finds that the Network Connections Service is working normally. Follow the same procedure, the Network Administrator checked the operating status of other system services and found that the operating status of the related system services was normal. This showed that the failure of the local connection icon was not related to the system services of the old server.

Fault solving

After trying a variety of methods to solve the problem, the network administrator had to search for relevant information in the Internet, it is likely that the Distributed COM Configuration Parameter of the old server system is incorrect. Click confirm to open the Distributed COM Configuration Attribute settings window. Click the default attribute tab in the window to open 3

On the tag settings page, where the "Default analog level" setting item is displayed, the network administrator finds that the parameter has been set to "anonymous, at this time, the network administrator selects the "ID" option again, and then click "OK" to restart the server system. This time, the network administrator saw the local connection icon display again.

Next, the network administrator double-click the local connection icon at the system tray area to enter the local connection attribute settings window of the old Server System and modify the IP address of the system, then, re-insert the network cable to the system host, and restart the system once, so that the old server system can access the Internet normally.
