Fedora Core 6 Linux installation Configuration

I downloaded the ISO version of the DVD by Using Bt. Every day at home, I had to start up BT for three or four days.

I used to use FC3 for a long time. Later, due to the problem between the FC4 zone and SELinux, the hard disk data was seriously lost, so the FC4 was quickly formatted after installation. As a result, I had a bad impression on the FC system.

Today, I finally made up my mind to face the fcseries and start my FC journey again.
Fortunately, everything went quite smoothly, much more perfect than I previously imagined.

I. Hard Disk Installation

I always prefer to use grub to start and install the kernel.
First, let's introduce my hard drive. I used a hard drive with a capacity of 80 GB. C: I installed WINXP. Several logical partitions later were mainly used to store software, music, and game. At last, 15 GB ext3 is left, and about MB is left for swap.

1. Separate and install the kernel

Put ISO in the Zod directory of the E disk.
Decompress the/isolinux directory in ISO to the FAT32 partition root directory using WinRAR, virtual optical drive, and other software in win. Backup.

2. Start grub

My grub for DOS is stored on the hard disk, so I have to try to boot it to dos. I used a genuine win98se disc to start a:/>
Go to the grub directory.
Run grub.
Since I have not restored grub after I reinstall win for a while, I have had the above troubles. (In fact, if there are Linux friends in the original system, you can press C in the GRUB menu to enter grub>)
Grub quickly scanned my hard drive system and immediately found that I kept the complete Debian system in/dev/hda9 and started grub to the system menu through the menu. LST file of the system.
Press the C key to go to grub>.

3. Start and install the kernel

Quote: grub> kernel (hd0, 5)/isolinux/vmlinuz Ro root =/dev/Ram ramdisk_size = 20000
Grub> initrd (hd0, 5)/isolinux/initrd. img
Grub> boot

After that, screen prompts such as kernel decompression that you are familiar with have appeared smoothly. :)
(Note: If you are a newbie, you may wish to make full use of its Tab key command and parameter complementing functions on the grub command line. This is fast and prevents errors.

The installation process is graphical, so it is not described in detail. Remember not to select the wrong partition.Ii. Feelings

1. The font is clearer than imagined.

The first obvious difference between fc6 and FC4 is that the font is clear. You don't need to make any so-called beautification, so you can get this effect, which is what I did not expect. It uses dejavu as the default font. Although there is a gap between dejavu and Microsoft, I believe it will be pleasing to the eye if I get used to it.

2. The installation speed is still relatively fast.

In the installation process, I only selected "office". Then I went out to the street during the software copy process and came back to the street to complete the installation.

3. Take care of your hardware.

Almost all of my hardware is well recognized, including chipset, Nic, independent sound card, independent video card, and display card. Of course, it also includes mouse and keyboard.

Iii. ADSL Internet access settings

Some friends said that the fc6 network is difficult to set up, and the old cannot connect to ADSL. In fact, the network settings in fc6 are almost the same as those in previous versions of Rh/FC. If you have any difficulties, you can do it with me.
Fc6 uses gnome 2.16.0 by default. The following table manager is used as an example.

1. Open the "Network Settings" dialog box

Main Menu-> system-> Management-> network, enter the Administrator (Root) password set during installation in the displayed window, and open the "Network Settings" dialog box.

2. View Nic activation status

If it is normal, you can see that eth0 should be activated. If you do not see anything, your network adapter may not be correctly recognized. You have to find related Nic information to install the corresponding driver correctly. Then let's take a look at the content in this section.
If eth0 exists, that is, it is not activated. Click the activate button at the top. If it is activated normally, go directly to 3.
If you still cannot activate eth0, try the following methods:
(1) Click the edit button above to open the "Ethernet device" dialog box.
(2) Click "static IP Address" single region.
(3) In the address box, enter 192.168.1.12.
(4) In the "subnet mask" box, enter 255.255.255.0.
(5) then click "OK" to exit this dialog box.
(6) Click the activation button at the top of "Network Settings" again. It should be activated normally.

3. Add and activate ppp0

Click "new" at the top to open the "Add new device type" box.
In the device type on the left, select "XDSL connection" at the bottom and click "forward.
On the New Page, enter any English identifier in the "provider name" box. Select "normal" in account typ. In "Login Name" and "password", enter the user name and password that the network provider gives you. Click "Forward" to return to the "Network Settings" dialog box.
Now there are multiple ppp0 settings under eth0. Click the device and then click "Activate. If it is normal, we can see that ppp0 has also been activated. It means that you can access the Internet now.

If ppp0 cannot be activated, it is most likely that you have not entered the correct "Login Name" or "password" above. You can click the "edit" button above to modify the settings.

You can go to the "XDSL Settings" box by clicking the "edit" button, and select the "Activate device when the computer starts" check box. This will automatically log on to the network when the computer starts up.

4. disable unnecessary service processes

If you are an individual user, you can shut down unnecessary service processes. In this way, the fc6 startup speed will be significantly improved.
Choose system> Management> services. The "service configuration" dialog box is displayed. Cancel the hooks before unnecessary services, and click "save" at the top. In this way, the canceled service will not be loaded when the computer starts up next time.

You can also immediately start/stop/restart the corresponding service process, through the "Start"/"close"/"restart" button.

I canceled the following items:
Maid/sendmail/lsdn/ip6lables/hidd/cups/mdmonitor/netfs/nfslock/cpsdc/rpcgssd/rpcmapd/
You can cancel the corresponding project as needed.5. Make the terminal fonts clearer

By default, the font of the terminal is still a bit hairy.
Let's make some settings in this way.

Terminal menu: Edit-> preferences-> current configuration file ..., in the "Edit configuration file 'default'" dialog box, deselect the check box before "Use System Terminal font" and click the button after "font, select a clear font and click OK. I chose "dejavu lgc sans".

This looks more refreshing.

6. Mount the win Partition

1. FAT32 partitions are automatically mounted

Quote: $ su # Switch to root user
# Mkdir/mnt/C # create a directory for attaching a C Disk
# Gedit/etc/fstab & # edit the disk mounting configuration file

In the Open Text Editor, add the following line:

Save and exit the file editor.
In this way, the C: disk will be automatically mounted when fc6 is started next time.
Perform this operation for other FAT32 partitions.

2. Manually mount the FAT32 Partition

3. Mount NTFS partitions

Go to the http://www.linux-ntfs.org to download the kernel patch.

Why? Even if fc6 is connected to the root permission to run fdisk-L, command not found will appear.
Originally, the/sbin directory path (system user directory) is not in the root $ PATH variable.

In the displayed text editor, find Path = $ path: $ home/bin.
Add ":/sbin" (without quotation marks) to the end of the row, as shown in the following line:

Save and exit.
The command under/sbin can be used normally after the next restart, without adding the/sbin/path when running the command.8. Make "Add/delete software" no longer a decoration

Yum is a KDE Desktop from a foreign server. After all, it is a pain. Make full use of our dvd iso.

1. Mount the partition where the ISO is located

(For details, see section 6)

2. Mounting ISO

Assume that my ISO is on the F disk and mounted to/mnt/F normally.
We are going to mount ISO to/mnt/ISO.

# Mount-T iso9660-o loop/mnt/f/Zod/f/FC-6-i386-DVD.iso/mnt/ISO

3. edit/etc/yum. Repos. d/fedora-core.repo

# Cp fedora-core.repo fedora-core.repo.backup

# Gedit fedora-core.repo

Comment out all rows starting with baseurl and list #.
Add a line at the end of section 1 [core:

4. OK

From the main menu-> Add/delete software, you can install/delete software in ISO.

9. Enable KDE to display the Chinese menu

We tried to add a KDE Desktop Manager through the "Add/delete software" function in section 8.
However, after logging on, you will find that the English interface is available, and only English items are available in the settings.
This is not good news for cainiao, such as E.
In fact, the menu can be converted into Chinese, which is also a simple task. Only one software package is needed.
Make sure that the dvd iso has been mounted.
The preceding directory is used as an example.

After entering the administrator password, the installation is completed instantly.
Log out of KDE (if you are currently using KDE)
Log on to the KDE again. The Chinese interface is displayed.

In fact, if you select KDE directly when installing the system, you do not need to worry about it.
Therefore, if this is not the case, you may choose to install the necessary software directly.

In addition, it is recommended that you install the development tools and library files on the CD to the hard disk.
Some of my documents in the future are for those files that have been installed. If you encounter errors when referring to these files, they may be related to this.
It is not described here.10. Install the NVIDIA driver

After fc6 is installed by default, the NVIDIA driver cannot be installed and compiled, which may cause a black screen on some machines.

The solution is as follows:

1. download the latest NVIDIA driver

2. single-user mode

# Chmod + x NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9626-pkg1.run

3. decompress the driver package

#./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9626-pkg1.run -- extract-only

4. modify a header file

# Cd NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9626-pkg1/usr/src/NV

Modify nv-linux.h

# Include Linux/config. h
Change to # include Linux/Autoconf. h

5 then switch to the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9626-pkg1 directory to execute

#./NVIDIA-Installer

Install it according to the conventional NVIDIA installation method.
