How do I configure a failover cluster for a file server?

DHCP servers need to use DHCP relay to assign IP addresses across network segments. Because DHCP relies on broadcasts to communicate, and different segments of traffic need to be routed, and routers are isolated broadcasts by default, all of the IP addresses to be assigned across network segments need to use DHCP relay.

Case: A company needs to build a file server to hold the company's core business data, files, and need the server has high security. The company currently has an iSCSI-based SAN (storage area Network) and has an iSCSI gateway. How should the file server be built to ensure high availability?

In this case, 3 hosts are used, one for DC-compatible DNS and iSCSI servers, and two cluster nodes. Because a device in a virtual environment does not meet the hardware requirements of a failover cluster, the iSCSI server is built here as a hardware store using Starwind 8.0.

The following steps are described.

(1) Plan server name and IP address. As shown in table 8-1.

(3) In the Failover Cluster Management window, select the cluster wincluster, and click Configure service or application, as shown in 8.1.

(4) In the High Availability wizard window, select the File Server option, click Next, and 8.2.

(5) In the Client Access window, enter the access name and IP address, and click Next, as shown in 8.3.

(6) In the Select Storage window, select the disk for the file server storage, 8.4, and click Next.

(7) Follow the installation Wizard to complete the configuration of the file server cluster.

(8) In the Failover Cluster Management window, select Winclusterfs, and right-click Add shared folder under the Actions pane on the right side, as shown in 8.5.

(9) In the Shared Folder Location window, click Browse, select the location of the shared folder store, and click Next, 8.6.

(10) In the NTFS Permissions window, you can set permissions for the shared folder, or you can use the default settings, click Next, and 8.7.

(11) In the "Sharing agreement" window, enter the shared folder name file, click "Next", 8.8 shown.

(12) In the SMB Settings window, using the default settings, click Next, go to the SMB Permissions window, select Administrator with Full Control, all other users and groups only Read access option, click Next, 8.9.
