Azure OPS Series 3: Leveraging Azure capture for less

In the process of using virtual machines, you will definitely use the virtual machine template to simplify our daily operations. If there is no virtual machine template that may take a lot of time to create multiple virtual machines in the same environment, when using azure we will find that Azure itself already has a number of virtual machine operating system versions and dates to choose from, but this is just as simple as including operating system and patch updates. Does not contain the application environment we need.

So since Azure doesn't have the application environment we need, we can create our own applicable virtual machine template image by capturing a custom image. First, we need to set up the environment we need in the virtual machine, and then initialize our virtual machine by running Sysprep.

When we're done, we go back to the Azure management portal, check the virtual machine, make sure the virtual machine is off, and click Capture below, so you can quickly create a virtual machine image.

After the capture operation, Azure performs a capture operation in the cloud, and the status of the virtual machine feeds back into the current state in real time, and the current capture progress can be understood through the task details below.

once we're done, we'll be in the virtual machine -Image You see a virtual machine image that has been captured.

this time, you can create a new virtual machine by -from the library to select the virtual machine template that we created.

In the advanced mode of virtual machine creation, we click My Image To see the currently available custom images, and on the right you can see the corresponding

Set the new virtual machine name and the associated configuration, and set a new user name and password.

set up the associated virtual machine configuration, including the cloud service configuration, Information such as the DNS name and the location of the virtual machine.

The final step confirms the installation of the virtual machine agent, or whether to configure the extended custom script.

In addition to creating virtual machine templates, the capture feature is also the snapshot feature of our private cloud, where we can capture a running virtual machine to create an image of the snapshot effect. We found a running virtual machine and clicked on the Capture button below, at which point we were prompted to say that the virtual machine has not been shut down, but can still continue capturing for the snapshot effect:

The image we created is also available, but the difference is that the image corresponds to a "source" virtual machine, click the "source" virtual machine to see the details of the virtual machine, and if the virtual machine is deleted, it is only visible as a callout.

we can still use the new virtual machine -Advanced mode, select My Image , you can see our newly created virtual machine image. Use this image to create a virtual machine with the same environment and data as the "source" virtual machine.

Whether it's a Windows virtual machine or a Linux virtual machine, capturing is very useful, not only as a snapshot, but also by pre-configuring the environment and capturing it to reduce our massive duplication of labor, as well as the ability to quickly scale the number of nodes in our cloud service. This allows for lateral elastic scaling. You can see that the whole process is actually very simple, but you can see that capturing is really a great way to reduce the amount of work in your daily operations.
