The Eclipse V3.2 has a number of compelling new features (a list of these features visible on the Eclipse Web site), but this article only briefly explores platform and Java features. The platform feature is the improvement of the Eclipse V3.2 development platform, which can benefit no matter what plug-ins you choose to install.

Platform Features

Many platform features are a reflection of the way forward in the common Eclipse interface. The highlights are: New Project Explorer, a comprehensive history view, better working set filtering and dynamic filtering, better help in dialogs, and a link to some resources. A number of other features are also introduced (see Resources).

The new Project Explorer organizes project resources in a way that is meaningful to various types of projects. In a Java project, the view looks much like Package Explorer. In other projects, such as WEB projects, Project Explorer organizes resources in different ways through Navigator view.

Have you ever said to yourself, "Well, five minutes ago this works." "And then look for the differences between the local code and the source repository to find out what changes have been made? If so, the ability to view Combined History can be a great help because it combines your local change history with the history of the source repository, like Concurrent versions System (CVS). This is a wonderful feature, because by looking at the change history, you can better track your changes and locate the problem faster.

Filtering by working set is not a new feature in itself, but it is now almost available in all windows, which is an improvement on older versions of Eclipse. If you have not set up a working set, you may want to try it. A working set allows you to bypass files that you don't care about, making it easier to find the files you need. If a large project has a lot of packages, but I only need to deal with and care about a small part of it, then you can create a working set that shows only those packages that are needed. It is also possible to set up a working set by file type. Therefore, if you only need to work with static HTML pages in your Web project, you can set up a working set to display only those pages.

The entire Eclipse dialog box complements better help, plus the Cheat Sheet view, which you can use to keep the Help window open while you follow the wizard or steps to create a project.

With linked resources, you can now add links to files within your project without having to copy the related files to your workspace. This handy feature avoids copying the same files to many workspaces.
