When you sort in ascending order, Microsoft Office Excel uses the following sort order. When sorted in descending order, the reverse sequence is used.

alphanumeric text is sorted verbatim by character from left to right. For example, if a cell contains text "A100", Excel places the cell at the back of the cell that contains "A1", before the cell that contains "A11." The text and the text that contains the numbers stored as text are sorted in the following order: • 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 (space)! "# $% & () *,. / : ; ? @ [] ^ _ ' {|} ~ + < = > A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z • Apostrophes (') and hyphens (-) are ignored. But the exception is if two text strings are the same except for hyphens, text with hyphens is lined up.
