- Backup preface
Regular database backup and recovery is the basic skill that administrators should master, even if database availability leases are deployed in the enterprise.
WSB to backup and restore Exchange, which is recommended for use in small-scale exchange environments, the large, medium Exchange environment recommends using Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager or third-party tools, such as NBU.
Backup considerations
Non-DAG environment
When using a WSB backup for a non-DAG environment, note the following:
You do not need to disable VSS Writer in the Exchange Server
Using VSS full backup
Full backup is recommended for first time backup
Only the disk partition "volume" Full backup supports log automatic cleanup, which is not supported by database files or folder backups. Therefore, you must select the entire initiator (the entire disk partition) of the Exchange database that you want to back up, and you cannot select only one of the folders that contains the Exchange database.
We recommend that you deploy a backup plan that is set up as incremental backup.
DAG Environment
When using WSB backup with a DAG environment, note the following
Exchange 2013 does not support streaming backups of databases, only VSS backups are supported.
After you disable VSS writer in the Exchange server, you need to restart the Microsoft Exchange Replication Replication Service.
Windows Server Backup does not support DAG members for backup and restore of DAG replicas.
The replica state between DAG member servers needs to be synchronized.
The index state between DAG member servers is a "healthy" state
Windows Server Backup supports only backup and restore of active databases.
- Install Windows Server Backup
After the Windows R2 default installation is complete, the WINDWOS server Backup component is not installed and requires an Exchange administrator to manually install the component. Open Server Manager, start the Add Roles and Features wizard, open features, select the Windows Server Backup component, and use the default installation. The installation is complete and it is recommended that you restart the Exchange server.

- Start the service
After the Exchange Server 2013 installation is complete, the default Microsoft Exchange server Extension for Windows server Backup is in the Enable, manual state.

It is recommended to start the service in the app environment and set it to Automatic mode, which will start automatically when the Mailbox database service starts, setting the completion parameters as follows:

- The DAG environment disables VSS Writer in the Exchange Server
In a non-DAG environment, you do not need to disable VSS Writer for the Exchange server.
When you use WSB to back up servers in a DAG group in a DAG environment, you need to disable VSS Writer. Run the "Regedit.exe" editor, open the registry, navigate to "Hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\exchangeserver\v15\repaly\parameters", and create a new named " Enablevsswriter "DWORD" value, set to "0",

- Back up the Exchange mailbox database in full mode
Take the non-DAG environment as an example to fully back up the Exchange Mailbox Library volume and verify the log changes before and after the backup.
- Verify the log before backing up.
In this example, the Exchange database is deployed in the E drive to see the number of items currently in the list, which is no longer, because the number has been reduced since it was backed up.
Verify the Exchange database location with the PowerShell command:
Get-mailboxdatabase
Get-mailboxdatabase-identity Mailbaox51 | FL *path*
The first command displays all available databases;
The second command displays the database file and log path.

- WSB Full backup
This example takes "Backup Schedule" and "Backup to shared folder" as an example. Back up the local volume, just the middle "Specify the target Type" "Specify the backup time" and subsequent differences, but the approximate meaning is very clear, you can test yourself.
Log on to the server with the Exchange Administrator, open Server Manager, navigate to storage, open Windows server Backup

Click the Backup Schedule feature in the Actions window on the right, and after the command executes, start the Backup Schedule Wizard.

Click the Next button to display the Select Backup Configuration dialog box as follows. In this case, do not make a full backup of the server, select "Custom". in a real-world application, when the first backup is recommended, select the "Entire server" option, backup the server as a whole, and then deploy the backup plan.

Click the Advanced Settings button, and in the Advanced settings switch to the VSS Settings tab, select the Backup method is VSS full backup. When the backup is complete, Exchange automatically shuts down the transaction log and frees up disk space. If the transaction log cannot be truncated, the transaction log will grow very quickly and will result in insufficient disk space.

Click the OK button to return to the select items to Back Up dialog box. Click the Add Item button to select the Backup destination in the Select Item dialog box. The original backup database is located on the E and F drives, selecting the entire target volume.

Click the Next button to display the Specify Target Type dialog box. A database backup can be stored locally on the server, or it can be saved to a remote shared folder. In this example, select Remote shared folder. If you select Backup to volume, it is recommended that the backup policy be adjusted for incremental backup after the first full backup is completed. Configure incremental backups in configure performance settings.
Note: In general, Windows Server Backup does not allow the backup results to be stored on the same volume as the source data.
If you are saving to a source data volume, you need to add the name "Hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\webengine\systemstatebackup" in the server Allowssbtoanyvolume ", the health value type is" DWORD ", the Health value is" 1 ".

Click the Close button. In fact, the backup has been completed, but consider some cases, many enterprises are directly backed up to the local disk or Nas/san storage devices, their backup method: Full backup + incremental backup way, then how to adjust the backup mode for incremental backup? Please see below.
- Adjust Backup methods
WSB The default backup is a full backup, and if the Exchange database is large, the full backup process will take longer, so the Exchange administrator can change the backup mode to "incremental" backup.
Open the WSB console, click the Configure performance Settings link in the actions pane on the right, and after the command executes, open the Optimize Backup Performance dialog box.
650) this.width=650; "src=" Http://s3.51cto.com/wyfs02/M02/85/71/wKiom1ejVeKwhI1gAAAbZkvOQCI575.png "/>
Select the Custom option, the backup target in this example is Exchange (E:), click the drop-down list button to the right of backup options, and select the Incremental backup option in the pop-up menu. Click the OK button to complete the parameter settings.
Note: The shared folder Backup method does not support incremental backups.
If you are not backing up to a shared folder, you are backing up on a native disk or a plug-in disk, where you can adjust the backup as an incremental backup.
- Verify Log after backup
WSB after the system volume backup is complete, open the destination folder where the Exchange database is located, verifying the number of logs after the backup was successful. If the quantity is much less than the original, it represents success.
