Hewlett-Packard, 7th, announced this month that it would buy an archiving management software manufacturer, Outerbay Technologies, to strengthen its storage business plan. The Outerbay company in Cupertino, Calif., specializes in developing archive management software for applications and databases used by enterprise customers. The financial terms of the deal are not disclosed and the acquisition is expected to be completed within the next two weeks.

The move is also the latest in HP's server, storage and software sector, which bought APPIQ and peregrine Systems last September. HP plans to use Outerbay technology to deliver products and services to customers running Oracle, SQL Server, and Sybase databases. Bob Schultz, general manager of HP's StorageWorks branch, said the acquisition was an important performance improvement for the company's existing customers, as 60% of HP's integrity server clients were running Oracle's application software and databases.

OuterBay has nearly 60 employees and most of them will be retained and integrated into the ILM (Information lifecycle management) and storage software departments of StorageWorks company. Frank Harbist, general manager of Hewlett-Packard's ILM and storage software business, said the company had worked with Outerbay for more than a year and had Habister a roadmap ... But the company plans to integrate more deeply into the next 1-2 quarters, while the products are loosely tied. Outerbay is also working closely with storage giant EMC to publish a system designed to store data and monitor data archiving and deletion. Although EMC and Hewlett-Packard are competitors, HP is willing to outerbay with EMC.
