Kubuntu 11.10 kernel compiled successfully

In other words, the main release versions of several mainstream Ubuntu branches have been tasted over the past two days as follows:

Ubuntu 12.04

Lubuntu 11.10

X Ubuntu 11.10

K Ubuntu 11.10

The notebook model is ThinkPad X220. The specific configuration is as follows:

In other words, after Ubuntu 12.04 is turned on, the CPU temperature is maintained at more than 60 for a long time. Although the ThinkPad fan is quite quiet (compared with my Sony VPCEB), what about it, in Windows 7, the boot temperature is at 40 degrees. After the program is run, it will increase to 50 +. Linux has no reason to be inferior to Windows 7? So we installed Lubuntu and Xubuntu one after another, which is good. These two versions are not worthy of targeting the low-end hardware system, and the CPU temperature is maintained at around 45 + degrees. with the use of the program, gradually increase to 50 +. However, the graphical interfaces of these two systems are too simple, especially Lubuntu. It feels like a semi-finished product. It is very shanzhai. Although we do not pursue this aspect, however, the basic user experience is expected to be satisfied.

So I continued to install Kubuntu with fear. Ha, this is really good. The Boot temperature is kept between 45-50, which surprised me very much. KDE and Gnome are at the same level of interface Foundation, which is higher than LKDM and Xfce (user experience and experience control granularity ). Before that, I always thought that the KDE System was quite brilliant, and there were a lot of details on the UI, And I always felt that the hardware performance would be quite poor.

However, one of the pain points is that the Kubuntu UI effects require OpenGL support, while the X220 graphics card is integrated into the CPU of core2, installation of CD with official installation seems completely unable to enable OpenGL mode, only the xRender mode can be selected. This is depressing. The xRender card with special effects.

So I decided to re-compile the ubuntu kernel. The kernel version 11.10 officially downloaded from Kubuntu is 3.0.0.12. I will not talk about the specific compilation process. It is too long. I will only explain the result:

The custom version information, that is, the append-to-version information you append. After compilation and installation, this additional information will also be available in Grub.

After the restart, I didn't feel that the boot was improved. But after the restart, go to the system to check the temperature, and feel quite comfortable. The temperature has dropped to 39 degrees, which is good. At this time, when I posted this blog post, I opened GIMP to modify images, and xiami.com's Flash Player to listen to songs. The temperature remained around 52 degrees.

We can see that the CPU usage is Chrome.

The most important thing is that OpenGL is enabled, and OpenGL special effects have been enabled:

Check whether OpenGL is activated. It can be determined through window decoration. Kubuntu itself provides a set of theme called Oxygen, which features the form implementation using SVG. If OpenGL is enabled (or xrender ), you will see that the window has an external effect, which is not implemented through the image. It is actually draw.

Alternatively, you can download some transparent windows in the window decoration set by the system. I initially determined that these forms are implemented using png, the form border is transparent, and the form shadow, it is actually implemented using images (because there is no shadow color in the advanced configuration and the window is translucent ). However, since the png format is made translucent, you will see that your window is translucent.

However, if OpenGL and Oxygen are not activated, you will not be able to see the glow outside the form. You will need to install oxygen gen-tran... but I think this is really unnecessary, because the form implemented through png is already very beautiful. If you use a png window, you will see the translucent part, which will turn black, just like closing the filter in ie (or failing to use the filter due to insufficient user permissions ), then the translucent png will have a Black edge.

Really tough
