Redmond, Washington, June 22--Microsoft was released today on Forum 2000. NET's new generation platform. With it, the third-generation Internet, characterized by a powerful combination of new network tools and programmable network services, will benefit all developers, corporate users and consumers. Microsoft based on Internet standards such as XML and SOAP. NET integrates the best computing and communication solutions today, enabling the Internet to leap from simple statements based on HTML protocols to programmable information based on XML standards. By giving consumers the freedom to tailor the network, Microsoft. NET service programs, products, and tools enable companies to effectively and securely communicate with consumers and business partners, providing consumers with a complete, secure, and casual network experience.
The reporter spoke to Steve Ballmer, Microsoft's president and chief executive, about what the new platform means for Microsoft's overall strategy and what it can do for corporate users, consumers and independent developers.
Reporter: Why does Microsoft want to develop such a new platform?
Ballmer: I spend a lot of time interacting with consumers, and they always ask me how to make the most of the opportunities that the Internet brings. Corporate users complain that their web site is not doing enough for them, and they want to interact more effectively with business partners and suppliers. They say they often fail to use the system efficiently and easily, and their employees often fret about finding the information they need online. Small companies say they want a cheap and easy-to-use solution to use the Internet to do business. Developers say it's really hard to make different programs work on the Web, and they still have to write the same commands over and over again in order to have a fairly basic function for the program. Consumers only want a simple and unified Internet access scheme and the ability to manage an ever-increasing number of Internet-connected applications.
We are aware that this is our bounden duty. We have enough experience to set up a platform, establish industry standards and provide support to other developers. With great patience, foresight and hard work, we have built a platform in the past few years. The basic "building material" for the new platform is in place, and we have a smart mind to get the new platform running.
Reporter: Compared with today's internet, what is the difference between the third generation of Internet?
Ballmer: Today's internet has much in common with old-style mainframe computers, where information is stored in a central server, and the user's operations depend on them. It is very difficult for today's web sites to convey meaningful information to each other, or to collaborate to provide a broader and deeper service. It is more difficult for users to obtain personalized network experience, or to get "private information space" to edit, analyze and share the network information.
Now, people are still adapting to technology, but we think technology should be people-oriented. New industry standards, including XML and SOAP, liberate information (from the server) so that they can be restructured, tuned, and programmed, and then displayed in any possible way, on any device or system. A platform based on these standards returns the right to control information back to the people who need it. Microsoft. NET is designed to achieve this goal entirely.
Journalist: What benefits will the new platform bring to information workers, corporate users and consumers?
Ballmer:microsoft. NET means that information workers can write, browse, edit, and share information with just one simple interface, and they also get powerful information management tools that they can use wherever they are and through which devices. At the same time, because their files exist in XML format, the entire company so that all Internet users can easily find and use the information. Companies of any size can use the same tools to communicate and share information efficiently with their suppliers, business partners, and customers, and to create more distributed services that can be aligned with legacy systems, client programs, and other Internet resources. All of this can help them to seize new business opportunities and manage the company more effectively.
Consumers will receive complete, secure and relaxed Internet access, and cover PCs, handheld devices and smart credit cards. All web users can get and take advantage of their information. For example, consumers can store their own health information on the web and easily control access to that information. Whether they are online or not, they can get the more stylized, personalized information they need, and there is no unnecessary management. All information updates and backups will be done automatically and communicated to the user in a timely manner.
Journalist: Microsoft's business partners and independent software developers have Microsoft. NET tools and services, what can you do after that?
Ballmer:microsoft. NET offers many excellent opportunities for developers and business partners. Microsoft. NET from scratch, provides a complete set of new network development tools, covering all databases, from the client to the server and the Internet. They enable developers to reinvent themselves, create entirely new service programs, or at Microsoft. NET as the core, build the package. People can freely order related artifacts as needed and focus on writing programs that distinguish them from other software products. Visual Studio, which will be listed later this year, will bring an example of visual Basic "drag-and-drop" programming to network application development. Developers can automate the development of value-added applications and their products can be used on all platforms that accept XML standards.
All of these benefits are invaluable to IT professionals in the company who want to develop and manage web-based applications "at the internet speed," but they also support large and complex network systems and feed thousands of information workers. They need management tools to help maintain and support a myriad of servers and portable devices. They need reusable coding and automated development tools to create rich, stylized applications that do not need to be at the expense of manageability and security. They need a universal solution that spans many business systems both inside and outside the company. Microsoft. NET building blocks and development tools will make this all possible for the first time.
Journalist: In the area of information privacy and security, Microsoft. Can net be helpful to consumers and company users?
Ballmer:microsoft. NET is designed to allow people to control when, where, and how to access their information. This is in fact the full meaning of information privacy and security. So this is the focus of all our work. Microsoft. NET identification program will be based on the "passport" and the Windows identification technology, so that developers have the ability to personalize and privacy into their application software-from simple identification to wallet, smart card and physiological parameters of the owner identity confirmation. Microsoft. NET's strong management capabilities will enable the company's IT managers to more reliably manage access to sensitive information. Consumers are also able to gain unprecedented confidence in where and by whom their personal information is stored and accessed.
We have built a solid foundation for this, with Kerberos support, Windows 2000 Superb management capabilities, and future Windows versions of P3P (Platform forprivacy Preferences) support.
Interviewer: How do you plan to launch Microsoft. NET?
Ballmer: From this year onwards, any effort we have made will revolve around Microsoft. NET and focus on the following three areas:
Microsoft. NET is the Foundation and tool of developing and running the new generation of service, is a kind of advanced user's network experience; NET Component Module service, or the development of new intelligent Internet equipment software.
Microsoft. NET products and services include Windows. Net;msn. NET, personal subscription service, which integrates core building module services, Office. NET; Visual Studio. NET and bcehtral based on. Net.
With these platforms, products and services, many Microsoft business partners and third party software developers will have the opportunity to produce based. NET platform, corporate-and vertical applications.
Journalist: Microsoft. What position does net occupy in Microsoft's current strategy?
Ballmer:microsoft. NET is an important turning point for our company. We are excited about the broad prospects of PCs and what our users can do with Windows 2000 and Microsoft Office. Our server business is strengthening, MSN also developed more and more good. Microsoft. NET will be based on these successes. This is a long process, similar to the transition from MS-DOS to Windows. We will continue to provide and support existing platforms and applications, including those that are not included. NET technology platform; However, after a long period of effort, our products and services will eventually be transformed into an ordered service, delivered via the Internet, users will be more comprehensive control of installation and backup, and access to unparalleled customer service. It does take a long time, but we have made great efforts and have the confidence to wait for that day to come.
