ThinkPad X201i Debian 7.5 Installation notes
I got a ThinkPad X201i from my company and installed Debian 7.5 for it. I chose netinst to install ISO. In this tutorial, the image is small and easy to install through the USB flash drive. I did not expect it to fall into two traps at once.
First, if you select the graphical method, the installer will detect the optical drive. Because this notebook does not have an optical drive, the installer will not pass the test and cannot continue the installation. The solution is to select text mode for installation to avoid this problem.
The second is that the netinst installation image does not contain the WiFi module firmware of this notebook, and the surrounding environment does not allow network cable access. Therefore, the network cannot be connected during installation. Fortunately, the installation can continue. Here, the installation can be completed according to the general steps.
Next we will discuss in detail how to install the Wi-Fi module firmware and the networking tool for this X201i. Go to the https://packages.debian.org page on other networked machines and download the following deb package:
- Firmware-iwlwifi: firmware of the Wi-Fi module. It is learned from the installation error prompt.
- Wireless-tools and their dependencies: wireless tool set
- Wpasupplicant and its dependencies: wireless networking tools
After these packages are installed/Etc/network/interfaces
Add the following content:
Auto wlan0iface wlan0 inet dhcp wpa-ssid <wireless ssid name> wpa-psk <wireless password>
Save and then execute:
Ifup wlan0
Connect to the wireless network.
