The release date of Windows 7 is getting closer and closer, and it is widely believed that Windows will become the terminator of Linux because it will replace Linux as netbooks) and end the hope of Linux on the desktop. However, I think Windows 7 is more appropriate than XP or Vista.

Because more and more netbooks and similar devices use Linux operating systems, one of the goals of Windows 7 is to be able to run properly on these devices. Therefore, once Windows 7 is released, the market share of Linux will certainly be greatly affected. This sounds quite reasonable, but it is somewhat inadequate, for three reasons:

1. The netbook is not the only website for Linux.

Smartphones (such as Android), embedded devices, kiosks, and enterprise desktop settings all have the Linux footprint. Although not every one of them is as sexy or eye-catching as the desktop, however, each field is crucial.

2. the user's dependence on Windows is decreasing.

Although I don't think network applications will replace desktop applications very quickly, this does happen for users with relatively low requirements. The new generation of PC users are more likely to accept Web applications than Microsoft products that rely on the Microsoft platform to run.

3. Microsoft's most direct competitor is itself.

In general, the user's attitude towards Vista is due to the use of XP or waiting for the release of Windows 7-not entirely because of Linux. Forums and blogs are full of anecdotes about why users are totally disappointed with Windows and are moving towards Linux, and there seems to be no such anecdotes.

So what is the fate of Windows 7? Windows will still have a high market share in the desktop field, while Apple and Linux will occupy the remaining market. Certainly, the scale of the remaining market will certainly increase, but Windows will continue to be the dominant player in the desktop field.
