Generating catalogs with WPS Office 2007

It's easy to insert a table of contents in a properly styled WPS Office 2007 document. Just place the cursor where you want to insert the directory (I usually place it at the beginning of the document), click "Insert" → "Reference" → "directory" from the menu, and make the appropriate settings in the pop-up Settings panel (Figure 1).

Here's a description of each of these options:

TAB leader This selects the guide between the entry and the page number of the table of contents, which is optional for styles such as dots, solid lines, dashes, and so on. Note that this item is associated with the "page number right" item below, and if "page number right" is not checked, the leader is not displayed.

Show level determines the level at which the directory is displayed. The default setting is "3", or "Heading 1" to "Heading 3", and if you select "2" Only "Heading 1" and "Heading 2" are displayed, heading 3 will not appear in the table of contents.

"Show page number" is whether the page number appears in the table of contents, checked for display, empty for display. This entry is also associated with the following "page number right", which is when "show page number" is not selected, "page number right" is not optional.

Page number right is the page number is right-aligned to the right of the corresponding entry, and the table of contents entry is connected to the page number with a "leader character". If you do not, the page number is immediately following the catalog entry, the leader character is not present, and the tab leader item is not selectable.

"Use HYPERLINK" to check the key in the table of contents and click on the table of contents, you can immediately jump to the corresponding position in the body, if not selected, will not jump.

"Options" button, press and eject the Setup Panel as shown in Figure 2. Here you can make further settings for the valid styles, levels, and so on of the directory.

When the directory of WPS Office 2007 is generated, if the automatically generated directory does not conform to your intent in terms of font, font size, and paragraph formatting, you can set it like editing plain text. In general, I want to add the word "Table of contents" to the top of the table of contents, and add a "page break" at the end of the table of contents to separate the part of the TOC from the body part. If you have changed the body after inserting the table of contents, you can update the table of contents in the same way as update fields. Clicking any text in the directory section with the right mouse button and selecting "Update Field" in the right-click menu pops up a dialog box like Figure 3, with the default option "Update page number only". If the structure of the document is not moving, just adding or deleting some text or adjust the font size, resulting in changes in position, with the "Only update page number" can be. If you have additions or deletions to the document's chapters or changed the text in the chapter headings, you will need to select "Update entire catalog." If you update the entire catalog, the font, font size, and paragraph settings we have previously made to the directory will automatically be "restored" and need to be reset.
