Install Gentoo on Hard Disk

If you use RedHat Linux, the installation will certainly not encounter any major problems,
It is easy to install from a CD, a hard disk, or an NFS network,
Because RedHat already provides you with a complete set of installed floppy disks.

However, if you do not have a burner and cannot install it on a CD, it is troublesome because Gentoo
No installation floppy disk is provided.

After my constant exploration, I tried a method to install Gentoo from the hard disk. Write it now,
I hope to help some friends who are about to or are installing a Gentoo hard disk.

1. Download the necessary stuff.

Download point of Gentoo livecd:
Http://mirror.pacific.net.au/gentoo/

Download point of grub for DOS:
Ftp://ftp.linuxeden.com/tinybit/grub_for_dos-0.2.0pre13.tar.gz

2. Partition the hard disk.

It is best to partition the hard disk in advance. I use the RedHat installation disk to partition the hard disk.
Of course, you can also use other partitioning tools for partitioning,
Partition format is not necessarily ext2/3 or swap format, as long as the size is appropriate, each partition
See the solution in the Gentoo installation manual. The "/Boot" partition does not need to be dozens of megabytes in size,
"/" Should be larger. If you want to compile a lot of software (such as OpenOffice KDE gnome), make an appointment.

Of course, you must be careful when partitioning. If your data is damaged, you may lose money.

3. Copy the installation file and grub for DoS

Use deamon tools to read the content in live CD and copy it to a partition (Note: it cannot be stored in the partition marked in step 1 ).
Then copy grub for DOS to a partition (note that it cannot be stored in the partition divided in step 1 ).
For simplicity, I copied grub and livecd to the same partition.

My system disk distribution Overview:

Ide1: hda st 60g
Ide3: CDROM
Ide4: HDD quantum Bigfoot 12.7 GB (My Gentoo is installed on this hard disk)

Hdd1 ext3/boot |
Hdd3 ext3/| --> for Gentoo
Hdd4 swap |

Hdd2 dos extended partition
Hdd5 FAT32 logical partition | --> Gentoo livecd and grub for DOS are copied
Hdd6 NTFS logical partition in this partition

4. Introduction to common grub commands:

You can refer to the grub help document:
Http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html
Or this:
Http://www.yesky.com/20020808/1624211.shtml

5. Edit the startup configuration file of grub for DOS: menu. lst.

What I wrote

# This is a sample menu. LST file. You shoshould make some changes to it.

Color black/Cyan yellow/Cyan # Set the displayed color
Timeout 60 # Wait 60 seconds before start
Default 0 # The first item is selected by default.

Title Gentoo Linux on (hd1, 4) # The first option. modify the content as needed.
Root (hd1, 4) # Because my installation file is on the 2nd fast drive, hd1 is used,
Because there are 5th partitions, the comma is followed by 4
Kernel/isolinux/Gentoo root =/dev/ram0 init =/linuxrc ACPI = HT
Looptype = squashfs loop =/livecd. squashfs udev nodevfs
Cdroot =/dev/hdd5 VGA = 791 dokeymap
Splash = silent, Theme: livecd-2004.3
Initrd =/isolinux/Gentoo. igz

# For more information about kernel and initrd, see the isolinux/isolinux. cfg file in livecd,
The content can be copied completely, but one thing needs to be modified. Add your livecd file to the cdroot file in the kernel statement.
The location is copied to hdd5, so it is cdroot =/dev/hdd5.

Save and exit. Then OK.

6. Use grub
Find a DOS boot disk, start the machine, and switch it to hdd5,
A:/G: enter (My hdd5 is a G disk in the DOS environment)
G:/CD grub (my grub.exe and menu. lst are stored in G:/GRUB)
G:/GRUB grub -- config-file = (hd1, 4)/GRUB/menu. lst
(Start grub, -- config-file to specify the location of menu. lst ).

OK. Now the grub interface is displayed in front of you. Select Gentoo Linux and Gentoo will be able to start livecd.
There is an error message during startup, probably because the location of the installation file refers to the hard disk (cdroot =/dev/hdd5
Caused by) press Ctrl + D to skip.
Next, you can install Gentoo according to the instructions in the Gentoo Installation Guide.

7. Hurry up and enjoy the fun Gentoo brings to you.
