As we all know, the BIOS (Basic input-output System), the basic input and output system of the computer, is a ROM chip integrated on the motherboard, which provides the most basic function support of the computer system. It includes boot code, basic hardware driver, parameter setup program and some software developed by manufacturers. One of the features of the BIOS is that it can be refreshed in a specific way, which is what is typically called a BIOS upgrade. In addition to getting a lot of new features, upgrading the BIOS can also solve some of the defects in the chipset, motherboard design, and troubleshoot some special computer failures. Mention of refreshing the BIOS, many people must think that this kind of thing is very dangerous, bad will be the BIOS brush bad. In fact, if you have the right method, and operate properly, generally there is no problem. How do you brush the BIOS? There are many ways to brush the BIOS, in addition to being able to refresh in DOS, you can also refresh under Windows, in addition to some motherboard manufacturers in its motherboard design of the BIOS refresh tool, after the boot press the corresponding key combination can be called the BIOS Refresh tool to refresh. Now let me give you a brief introduction.

Now the domestic market is more popular motherboard BIOS is mainly award BIOS and AMI BIOS, the different types of bios used by the Refresh program is not the same. We can judge by the post screen, or press the "Del" key to enter CMOS after the boot, in its settings interface. The following are examples of the award BIOS:

Refresh in DOS

This is the most common one of the Refresh method.

STEP1 Download the latest BIOS files for the motherboard (such as: Awardbios.bin files) and the Refresh utility Awdflash.exe to a folder on your hard disk, such as the D:bios folder.

STEP2 makes a Windows 98 boot disk, which is set to boot from the floppy drive in the BIOS, and uses this boot disk to boot the system into the DOS real mode state.

Note: When making a Startup disk under Windows 98, select Copy only system files. The Io.sys, Msdos.sys, Command.com, are the only three files that are produced in the startup tray.

In addition, if your system is Windows 98, you can also quickly press the F8 key when the system starts up, select 6th "Safe mode Command Prompt only" in the Startup selection menu that appears, and you can also enter into DOS real mode.

STEP3 Enter the CD D:bios and enter the D:bios directory. Enter Awdflash.exe and enter the interface to refresh the software.

STEP4 Enter the new version of BIOS name awardbios.bin you downloaded after "File Name to Program".

STEP5 return, the Refresh software will ask you the "Do your want to save BIOS (y/n)", for the sake of insurance, we generally press the "Y" key to select the backup of the original BIOS files. Press the prompt to enter the BIOS file name (such as Oldbios.bin) to be saved after "file Name to save", at which point the refresh program starts backing up your BIOS files.

After the STEP6 backup is complete, the Refresh program prompts you again "Are you sure to" (y/n), does it mean that you are sure to update the BIOS? This enter "Y" and the Refresh program writes the latest BIOS file into the BIOS.

After the completion of the BIOS refresh, there will be two prompts: one is to press F1 to reboot, the second is to press F10 exit back to DOS, you can choose according to your actual situation. If you think your refresh operation is completely correct, you can press F1 to restart the computer, and if you think there are some errors or improper in the refresh process, press F10 to exit and refresh again.

Refreshing under Windows

With the increasing number of Windows users, people are becoming more and more accustomed to operating under the graphical interface, after all, the number of people with DOS is becoming less. And a lot of users just contact the computer always feel that DOS is an unfathomable thing, the first heard is in the DOS environment upgrades, has been afraid of three points, where dare to do BIOS upgrades? So some vendors have launched the BIOS Refresh tool in Windows, These graphical interface programs are more powerful and easier to operate than DOS refreshes, and are more suitable for people accustomed to Windows operations.

WinFlash.exe is the BIOS Refresh program in award's Common Windows environment (its download address is: Http://file.mydrivers.com/bios/award-WinFlash172.exe), After downloading from its website to decompress, double-click WinFlash.exe to enter its main interface, as shown in Figure 1.

Click on "file→update bios" to find the downloaded BIOS files from the hard drive directory (Figure 2).

Click "Open", the program starts to prompt you whether to update the BIOS, click Update to start refreshing, (Figure 3).

After the BIOS refresh is finished, Figure 4 appears, and when Yes is selected, the computer restarts.

Online Refresh

In addition to being able to refresh the BIOS under Windows, you can also refresh your motherboard BIOS online via the network. For example, Pan is a company to provide an online refresh tool magicflash (download address: http://www.epox.cn/download/soft/MagicFlash.zip), the use of Magicflash can be online refresh.

After decompression, double-click Magic BIOS.exe to run, as shown below. Magic BIOS boot, the system will automatically identify the current BIOS version of the motherboard, you can click on the top of the image in the red box identified with the button, check your motherboard for a new BIOS version, if your motherboard has a new BIOS, after a while, The software will be able to check your motherboard for a new version of the BIOS.

Note: Online refreshes may be affected by network speeds and servers, and it is generally not recommended that you choose this method for refreshing.

Refresh with the Refresh tool with the BIOS itself

In addition to being able to refresh the BIOS under DOS and Windows, some motherboard manufacturers have built-in refresher programs in the motherboard BIOS to facilitate user BIOS refreshes. If you find the words "alt+f2 to enter Awdflash" on the post screen, congratulations, your motherboard BIOS has a built-in refresh program. You simply download the BIOS file from your motherboard to a floppy disk, insert the floppy disk into your floppy drive, and then start your computer, and immediately hold down the ALT and F2 keys, the system will automatically start the Refresh interface, and start to detect the floppy disk BIOS files and the motherboard of the BIOS file match, The automatic refresh begins when the test is finished. A progress bar will be displayed during the refresh process, and the system will start automatically when the refresh is complete. At this point, your BIOS is already refreshed with a good bios. It's a lot simpler!

Note: Regardless of which method to refresh, be sure to be aware of during the refresh process can not be a power outage or restart phenomenon, and do not randomly press the keyboard. If the refresh fails, there will be no display, then the BIOS must be rewritten.

Resolution after a failed refresh

People have missed, horses have lost their hooves, tigers have naps, not to mention the flash BIOS? So, you must be ready to refresh the BIOS failure, is the so-called "preparedness." If the brush is really bad, it doesn't matter, I'll teach you three strokes to make sure you brush the BIOS back again.

The first trick is to use the boot block (root) to repair the BIOS

If you do not show what the computer after the boot still read the floppy drive, floppy drive lights, then congratulations, the BIOS in the boot block (root zone) has not been damaged, you can also use the boot block (root) Have the BIOS perform the Autoexec.bat file on the bootable floppy disk to repair the BIOS.

Note: the Boot block (root) is part of the BIOS and is not normally refreshed. When we boot up, the computer will first execute the root zone program, if the BIOS is intact at this time, the computer will normally boot. However, if the BIOS program is found to be corrupted, the root program is enabled, but only floppy boot and ISA video display are supported.

Make a Startup disk (containing only "Io.sys, Msdos.sys, Command.com" three files), copy the BIOS refresh program Awdflash.exe and BIOS data file Xxx.bin to the boot disk. Open Notepad, enter "Awdflash xxx.bin/py/sn/sb/cd/cp/r" (without quotes), save as a Autoexec.bat file, and copy it into your startup disk.

Note:/py means that the refresh program is automatically executed,/SN indicates that the old BIOS file is not backed up,/sb that the BIOS root zone is forcibly skipped while refreshing,/CD clears the DMI data immediately after the BIOS is refreshed, and/CP immediately clears the Plug and Play data (ESCD) after the refresh is complete; R indicates automatic restart after the BIOS is refreshed.

Insert a good boot disk into the floppy drive to start the computer, the system begins to read the floppy drive, after the floppy disk drive stops reading, the system automatically restarts the computer. After starting to see if there is another display.

The second "Hot swap" repair bios

If the first trick is not true, you can also use the "hot plug" method to repair the BIOS, but only if you have to find the same type of motherboard.

Note: "Hot plug" all the operation is in the case of electrification, so you must adventurousness. In addition, if your BIOS chip is directly welded to the motherboard, this method will not work. Remove the static, then open your chassis, find the BIOS on the motherboard, and take it out. Note that there are two main packages of BIOS chips: One is dip package (Figure 5), we can use a screwdriver with a small flat mouth to pry it up slowly around the chip, while the other is the PLCC32 package (Figure 6), which can only be taken out by special tools because of its particularity.

Turn on the ready computer and boot to DOS. When the host is charged, remove the normal BIOS chip, plug the damaged BIOS chip back into the motherboard, and use Awdflash.exe to write a correct BIOS version to your BIOS.

Note: When the BIOS completes the post electric self-test procedure, the system initiates the bootstrap procedure, the operating system takes over the control power, completes the machine to start the process. After that, the BIOS has completed its historical mission in addition to the relevant program to invoke the interrupt program in the BIOS, if we unplug the BIOS chip at this time, it will not affect the system's normal operation. At this point, you can plug the damaged BIOS chip back to the motherboard, run the appropriate refresh program can be the BIOS file brush back.

The trick of the third trick

If the first trick does not work, the second recruit you do not dare to use, then only use the third recruit-ace, that is-to find professional maintenance of commercial-specific editor repair.

How, have I these three strokes to keep your motherboard bios from the dead.
