Some firewalls allow only one pcAnywhere controlled end to use one IP port. Other pcAnywhere terminals behind the firewall must use another port. You want to know how to change these ports.

To change the pcAnywhere IP port, you must edit the Windows registry. If you need to perform this operation frequently, creating the. reg file is the safest and most convenient way to change it. It is especially convenient for the host terminals that may need to connect to the _ blank "> multiple Controlled Terminals after the firewall.

Create a. reg file:

Click Start, and then click Run ".
In the open box, type regedit and click OK ".
Find and select the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Symantec/pcAnywhere/CurrentVersion/System

Click Registry, and then click Export registry file ". The "Export Registry File" window appears.
Enter the file name (for standard port numbers, such as 5631.reg or any other meaningful name) and save the file on the desktop.
Close the registry and navigate to the. reg file you just created.
Right-click the file and click "edit" (the file is imported back to the registry with the left mouse click ).
Delete all content except the following lines:

REGEDIT4

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Symantec/pcAnywhere/CurrentVersion/System
"TCPIPDataPort" = dword: 000015ff
"TCPIPStatusPort" = dword: 00001600

Save and close the file.

You can use this file as a template to create a. reg file for other ports, or use it to restore pcAnywhere to the default port value.

Create a. reg file and change pcAnywhere to a different port group:
Copy the default. reg file and rename the new copy.
Right-click the new. reg file and click "edit ".
Change the DWORD value for each port.
Key Point: these values are hexadecimal. It must be replaced with the hexadecimal value of the new port number. For more information about how to determine hexadecimal values, see the section "How to Determine hexadecimal values" below.
Save and close the file.

If necessary, repeat the process on other controlled or master terminals.

Example

The default pcAnywhere port numbers are 5631 (DataPort or TCP) and 5632 (StatusPort or UDP ).
The hexadecimal values of these ports are 15FF and 1600, respectively.

You can create a new. reg file to change the pcAnywhere ports to 5641 (TCP) and 5642 (UDP ).
The hexadecimal values of these ports are 1609 and 160A, respectively.
The content of the. reg file with these values is displayed:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Symantec/pcAnywhere/CurrentVersion/System]
"TCPIPDataPort" = dword: 00001609
"TCPIPStatusPort" = dword: Running 160a

To change the port value of pcAnywhere, double-click this file to import the new value to the Registry.

Port match

You do not need to set the IP port of the pcAnywhere master end to the same as that of the control end. However, some _ blank "> firewalls have been configured. Therefore, the ports that the pcAnywhere host must respond to must be the same as those of the host, otherwise they cannot be connected. In this case, the master port must match the control port.

Restrict the pcAnywhere Port

You can force the pcAnywhere controlled or master to only use the registered port. To perform this operation, you need to change the registry.

Click Start, and then click Run ". The "run" window appears.
In the open box, type regedit and click OK ". Open Registry Editor.
Find and select the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Symantec/pcAnywhere/CurrentVersion/System

Click "edit", point to "new", and click DWORD Value. A New DWORD value will appear in the frame on the right.
Name this value tcpipportcompatibility and press Enter.

The default data value of this item is "1 ". When a New DWORD item is created, the value automatically assigned is "0 ". This is the value required to restrict pcAnywhere from using registered ports.

One case

As the master user, you need to connect to the three control terminals after the WinRoute _ blank "> firewall. Each controlled end uses different port groups. In this example, the Controlled Terminals are stationa, stationb, and stationc.

Stationa (Port 5631/5632 is used)
Stationb (Port 5641/5642 is used)
Stationc (Port 5651/5652 is used)

To connect these controlled terminals, you need to create three. Reg files (one for each port group ). In this example, these files are stationa. Reg, stationb. Reg, and stationc. Reg.

To connect to stationa, double-click the stationa. reg file. If you perform this operation on Windows 98, the following dialog box appears:

Click "yes ".

Note: Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 are not prompted. They will directly import the registry files.

After the data is entered in the Registry, the following dialog box is displayed:

Now, the pcAnywhere on the master terminal can be connected to any controlled terminal on port 5631/5632.

To connect to the controlled terminal on stationb, double-click the stationb. reg file to change the control terminal to connect to the controlled terminal on port 5641/5642. Use the same method to connect to stationc.

Remember: Port 5631/5632 is the standard pcAnywhere IP port. Always keep a. reg file to restore to those ports.
