How to import and export the Registry content in WindXP

Registry import and export are available in regedit.exe Registry Editor. You can export registry entries as common text files and use common editing software (such as Notepad, WordPad, or MicrosoftWord) then, import the modified registry file to the Registry to indirectly modify the registry.

Export the registry key as a common text file

To export the registry key content, follow these steps:

(1) Select the Registry to export.

(2) Select "file"> "Export" to open the "Export Registry File" dialog box, as shown in 15.6.

(3) In the "Save in" drop-down list, you can select the storage location of the exported registry file. In the "file name" text box, you can enter the name of the exported registry file, in the export range option group, you can select "all" or "selected branch" to determine whether to export all registry files or only the selected
Registry Key File.

(4) Click "save" to export the selected registry file.

View the exported Registry File

To view the exported registry file, perform the following operations:

(1) double-click the "my computer" icon to locate the exported registry file.

(2) Right-click the Registry file and select the "edit" command from the shortcut menu. The default Notepad program is used to open the Registry file, as shown in Figure 15.7.

(3) If you do not want to use the Notepad program to open the Registry file, you can right-click the Registry file and choose "open mode"> "Select Program" from the shortcut menu, open the open mode dialog box, as shown in Figure 15.8.

(4) In the "select programs to be used" list box, select the program to open the Registry File (for example, WordPad program ).

(5) Click "OK" to open the Registry file with this program, as shown in Figure 15.9.

(6) You can view, edit, and modify an opened registry file. Note that the exported registry file cannot be opened by double-clicking. double-clicking the Registry file will merge the registry.

Import the modified registry file to the Registry.

Import the modified registry file to the Registry to modify the registry. To import the modified registry file, perform the following operations:

(1) Open Registry Editor and select the registry key to import.

(2) Select "file"> "import" to open the "Import Registry File" dialog box, as shown in 15.10.

(3) In the dialog box, select the Registry file to be imported and click open.

(4) The "Registry Editor" dialog box is displayed, as shown in Figure 15.11.

(5) This dialog box displays information about the Registry file that has been entered into the registry. Click OK to import the Registry file to the Registry.
