CHKDSK is a command that the system checks the current state of the disk, starting it to display the disk status, memory status, and the number of disjoint files specified under the specified path. Select Start → run to enter "Chkdsk" to start Chkdsk, which automatically verifies the file and converts the lost link to a file. More about CHKDSK: Create and display a status report for a disk based on the file system you are using. Chkdsk also lists and corrects errors on the disk. If you do not take any parameters, Chkdsk displays the status of the disks in the current drive. Syntax chkdsk [volume:][[path] FileName] [/f] [/V] [/R] [/x] [/c] [/l[:size]] parameter volume: Specify a drive letter (Colon delimited), mount point, or volume name. [Path} FileName] Specifies the location and name of the file or set of files that you want Chkdsk to check for defragmentation. You can specify multiple files by using wildcards (* and?). /F Repairs errors on the disk. The disk must be locked. If Chkdsk cannot lock the drive, a message appears asking if you want to check the drive the next time you restart your computer. /V Displays the name of each file in all directories when the disk is checked. /R finds bad sectors and recovers readable information. The disk must be locked. /x is only used on NTFS. If necessary, first force the unmount of the volume. All open handles to the drive are invalid. The/x also includes the function of/F. /I is only used with NTFS. Perform a full check on index entries to reduce the amount of time that is spent running CHKDSK. /C is only used with NTFS. Skips the cycle check in the folder structure, reducing the amount of time that is required to run CHKDSK. /l[:size] is used only with NTFS. Change the size of the log file to the size entered by the user. If this argument is omitted,/L displays the size of the current log file. /? Displays help at the command prompt. Note Running CHKDSK to run the chkdsk command on a fixed disk, you must be a member of the Administrators group. Check for locked drives on restart if you want CHKDSK to repair the disk error, you cannot open the file on the drive before. If a file is open, the following error message is displayed: Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is on use by another processwould what do I schedule To be checked the next time the SYStem restarts? (y/n) If you choose to check the drive the next time you restart the computer, CHKDSK automatically checks the drive and fixes the error after you restart the computer. If the drive is partitioned as a boot partition, CHKDSK automatically restarts the computer after the drive is checked. The report disk error CHKDSK command checks disk space and file allocation table (FAT) and NTFS file system usage. Chkdsk provides information specific to each file system in the status report. The status report displays errors found in the file system. When you run Chkdsk on an active partition, if the/F command-line option is not included, it may report spurious information because it cannot lock the drive. You should not periodically use CHKDSK to check for errors on each disk. Fix disk errors only the-f command-line option is specified, and the chkdsk command repairs disk errors. Chkdsk must be able to lock the drive to correct the error. Because the fix typically changes the disk's file allocation table and sometimes loses data, CHKDSK first sends a confirmation message such as the following: Lost allocation units found in 3 chains. Convert lost chains to files? If you press Y,windows, all the lost chains in the root directory will be saved in a file named FILEnnnn.CHK. After Chkdsk finishes, you can see if the files contain the data that you want. If you press N,windows to repair the disk, but for the missing allocation unit, it does not save its contents. If you do not use the/F command-line option, CHKDSK sends a message when a file needs to be repaired, but it does not fix any errors. This can take a long time (for example, a few days) to complete if you are using chkdsk/f on a large disk (for example, five GB) or a disk with a large number of files (millions of). The computer will not be available during this time because CHKDSK will not surrender control until the work is done. Check FAT disk Windows displays the Chkdsk status report for FAT disks in the following format: Check NTFS disks windows displays the CHKDSK status report for NTFS disks in the following format: If you have an open file, use CHKDSK if the drive When the file is open, Chkdsk sends an error message after the/F command-line option is specified. If the/F command-line option is not specified and an open file exists, CHKDSK reports the missing allocation unit on the disk. This behavior can occur if the open file is not logged in the file allocation table. Such asIf Chkdsk reports a large number of allocation units missing, you may consider repairing the disk. Find Physical Disk errors use the/r command-line option to find physical disk errors in the file system. For information about using recover to repair physical corrupted files, see. Report disk bad sectors the bad sectors that CHKDSK reports are marked as corrupted when the disk is first ready to run. They do not pose a danger. Understanding the exit Code The following table lists the exit codes that are reported after Chkdsk finishes the task. Exit code Description 0 No errors found. 1 error has been found and fixed. 2 The cleanup disk has been executed (for example, fragmentation collection) or the clean disk has not been performed because/F was not specified. 3 The disk cannot be inspected because the/F option is not specified, the error cannot be repaired or the error is not fixed. The Recovery Console provides CHKDSK commands with different parameters. Example if you want to check the disk in drive D and you want Windows to fix the error, type: Chkdsk d:/f If an error is encountered, Chkdsk pauses and displays the message. When Chkdsk finishes the task, it displays a report with the status of the disk listed. You cannot open any files on the specified drive unless CHKDSK has completed the task. On the FAT disk, to check the nonadjacent blocks of all the files in the current directory, type: CHKDSK *. CHKDSK displays the status report, and then lists the files that meet the conditions of the nonadjacent blocks.
