Install and configure CentOS 6.8 in VMware

CentOS developer and maintainer Johnny Hughes released the CentOS Linux 6.8 operating system earlier. The system brings new Linux 2.6.32 kernel and many changes.

CentOS Linux 6.8 officially released: new kernel version + a large number of updates
The updates are as follows:
• New Linux 2.6.32 Kernel
• TB data can be stored in the XFS File System
• A large number of application updates, including LibreOffice 4.3.7 office kit, Squid 3.4 cache and forwarding Network Proxy
• Applications such as Git, YUM, Postfix, OpenLDAP, stunnel, and vsftpd now support TLS 1.2
• Dmidecode open-source tool (view hardware information) now supports SMBIOS 3.0.0
• SSLv3 is disabled by default to ensure user security

Brief Introduction

There are many installation methods for Linux. Next, we will take image installation as an example to introduce the CentOS installation process and related parameter settings. The detailed steps are as follows.

CentOS installation Configuration

Open VMware and click Create New VM.

Select install the operating system later and click Next ].

[Client operating system] and the corresponding [Version], select "Linux" and "CentOS", and click [next ].

Set the Virtual Machine name and location, and click Next ].

Specify the disk capacity. By default, click Next ].

Click custom hardware to set the memory, processor, network adapter, etc. Here we will first set the image-to guide the system installation. The network settings will be explained later.

Select CD/DVD (IDE), select use ISO image file, Click Browse, select the previously downloaded image file, and click OK ].

Click Finish and click play virtual machine. wait patiently until the installation process is completed to enter the Linux installation interface.

Select the Install or upgrade an existing system menu, and press Enter to wait for the installation program to boot.

After the boot is complete, a window pops up asking you if you want to check the media. If you do not need to check the media, you can Skip this step using Skip.

Click Next to continue the installation.

Language of installation, select the Chinese (Simplified) menu, and click Next to continue.

On the System keyboard, select the American English style menu and click Next to continue.

Specify the storage media to be installed. Generally, select "basic storage device" (such as the local hard disk) and click Next to continue.

In this case, a window is displayed asking if you want to format the existing storage device. Formatting clears all the data, so proceed with caution.

Enter the host name. The host name can be customized and consists of numbers, letters, and lower arcs. Click Next to continue.

Time zone, select Asia/Shanghai from the drop-down list, and click Next to continue.

Set the root account password. after entering the password, click Next to continue. Remember the entered password.

Note: If the password is too simple, there will be another prompt: choose to use it anyway.

Installation types include:

  • Use all space: Use the blank disk to install the system.
  • Replace existing Linux systems: Use existing partitions for installation.
  • Reduce existing systems: Modify existing partitions to free up space for creating partitions.
  • Use free space: use free space.
  • Create custom Layout: use custom partitions.

Generally, select create custom layout and click Next ].

Select a free partition and click Create.

Select standard partition and click Create.

Create a boot partition and select the mount point:/boot. The file system type is ext4 and the size is 200 MB. (The boot partition generally stores some pre-loaded kernels and init files, so MB is enough ).

Create a home partition. Generally, set it to around 5 GB.

To create a swap partition, set the file type to swap (the first mount point is unavailable at this time). If the memory is smaller than 4 GB, set it to 2 times the memory. If the memory is larger than 4 GB, as large as the memory settings.

Create a root partition, select mount point:/, file system type: ext4, and select [use all available space]

Check whether the partition is correct. At this time, the partition information has not been written to the disk. You can modify the information, confirm the information, and click Next ].

Prompt format warning, click format ].

When saving the partition information, you will be prompted to write data to the disk. Click "Write changes to hard disk" to partition the disk.

The system prompts the position of the boot loader. Keep the default value and click Next ].

Copy the software during Linux installation and wait patiently for the installation to complete.

Congratulations, CentOS installation is complete. Click Reboot to enter the system.
