Install the Virtual Machine Tool VMware Tools on the vSphere Client

1. What is a virtual machine tool?

VMware Tools is a set of utilities installed in the virtual machine operating system. VMware Tools improves the performance of virtual machines and provides multiple easy-to-use features in VMware products.

Although the client operating system can still run without installing VMware Tools, many VMware features are only available after installing VMware Tools. For example, if VMware Tools is not installed on a virtual machine, the detection signal information from the client operating system cannot be obtained, or the shutdown or restart option in the toolbar cannot be used. You can only use the power option and must disable the client operating system from each virtual machine console. You cannot use VMware Tools to connect to or disconnect Virtual Devices and compress Virtual Disks. The features listed below are only available after VMware Tools is installed:

  • Supports the graphic performance and Windows Aero experience greatly improved on the Aero operating system.
  • Display the Unity function on the host desktop like any other application window.
  • Shared Folder between host and Client File System
  • Copy and paste text, graphics, and files between the VM and the host or client Desktop
  • Improved mouse Performance
  • The clock in the virtual machine is synchronized with the clock on the host or client desktop.
  • Script to help automatically execute client operating system operations
  • Run the pre-frozen and post-restored static scripts
  • Enable static snapshot capture for the client operating system
  • Periodically collects network, disk, and memory usage information from the client operating system and sends it to the ESXi host.
  • Sends a detection signal to each virtual machine every second, and collects the client detection signal information from the client operating system. VMware HA can use detection signal information to determine the availability of virtual machines.
  • Use the client operating system environment variable guestinfo. ovfEnv that contains the XML document to transmit the OVF environment to the client operating system.
