Install Windows 7 on a USB flash drive

USB boot disks are becoming increasingly popular. Because of some lightweight laptops, there is no optical drive at all. It is easier to bring a USB flash disk than a CD disk.

This document describes how to create a Windows boot disk. Take Windows 7 ISO as an example. First, prepare a win7.iso, which is the win7 installation disk image. This image is available in Microsoft's online store. In addition, prepare an empty USB flash drive no less than 4 GB and format it as FAT32.

The following are some feasible methods. However, the USB installation disk may still be inexplicably incorrect. Try more.

1. Use Windows 7 USB/DVD download Tool

This is known as a dumb tool, but I found it is not that easy to use.

When installing the USB tool, the system prompts that the Image Mastering API V2.0 (imapiv2.0) for Windows XP (kb932716) is missing.

However, when I use Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool, the following error occurs:

The selected file is not a valid ISO file Windows 7 USB, please select a valid ISO file and try again.

Because I copied win7.iso directly. According to the successful response, if the purchased Microsoft ISO is copied to the USB flash disk and DVD, there is no problem.

Many people have encountered this problem and have proposed a solution here (in English ). He provides a tool. Run isoavdpcopy iso_file directly under cmd.

Some people also use the following method to create ISO compatible with win7 USB tool:

Note: For non-genuine win7, it is likely that an error will be reported, even if the isoavdpcopyiso_file tool is used, it may not be successful.

2. Use MS-diskpart

Assume that the USB flash drive is F:

First, format the USB flash drive as NTFS.

To Format a USB flash disk as NTFS, you must change it to "optimized to improve performance" in the USB flash disk attribute policy"

Format F:/fs NTFS

List Disk
Select disk x (x is the # Number of the previous command)

Select partition 1

But when I used it, I found that list disk does not have a USB flash disk. (Because list disks are used to list the local fixed disks, and the default disk is a mobile hard disk, which cannot be listed. You can use a tool to change the mobile hard disk to a fixed hard disk)

Solution:

Use the lexar bootit tool to change the USB flash drive to a fixed disk ).

Attach win7.iso to a virtual optical drive such as Daemon, for example, to a Z: disk.

Z:

CD/boot
Bootsect/nt60 F:

Xcopy Z:/F: // s/E

Note: Generally, the USB flash drive is removable. You need to use a tool to change it to a local hard disk.

3. ultraiso

Use ultraiso premium 9.3.3 or later to open win7.iso

From the boot menu, click "Write hard disk image" and select a USB flash disk. (Bootable "and" Write disk image ".)

Note: I tried this method twice.

4. poweriso (Full Edition)

Open the menu "file", "attribute", check UDF, and click OK. Save it.

Note: I have never tried it. You may try it.

5. Use 7-zip

USB format to FAT32

Use 7-zip to decompress win7.iso to the root directory of the USB disk.

Note: This method is successful once.

6. ubuntu (or Ubuntu live CD)

1. sudo fdisk-l (U Disk:/dev/SDB (Disk),/dev/sdb1 (partition ))
2. sudo dd If =/dev/Zero of =/dev/sdb/BS = 1 m COUNT = 1
3. sudo blockdev -- rereadpt/dev/SDB
4. USB-creator-GTK

Select win7.iso or DVD on the graphic interface to generate a USB disk boot disk.

Note: I have never tried it. You may try it.

7. Burn the USB disk into USB-CDRom and USB-HDD.

Download the chip genie, view the USB flash drive chip, and write down the vid and PID.

Download the corresponding Chip USB production tool, set the corresponding parameters, specify the win7.iso production.

This seems promising, but I have not succeeded yet.

There are graphic tutorials on the Internet.

Note: This method requires support from USB flash drives or AP user tools. You need to find the tool of your own USB flash drives. It is dangerous.

For the above method, I only have some verification and only provide some ideas. The situations for each person are different. The ticket is not packed successfully.

I used Lenovo OEM version to install win7 on x61. I tried methods 1, 2, and 3. After a long time, I did not succeed. Method 5 is very smooth, and the method is simple. You may try it.
