Installation and simple setting of Linux in VMware

When you hear about Linux, FreeBSD, and even OS2, do you want to try it? But when I heard that I needed to re-cut the hard disk and the original data may be lost, do I have to hesitate? I had been away from Linux for a long time until I found VMware. It not only ensures that Linux can be correctly installed and run properly, but does not damage the original operating system. It does not bother us to study how to divide hard disk partitions into reasonable and efficient ones. Next, I will introduce how to use this software to install Linux.

1. installation and configuration of VMware

Simply put, VMware is a virtual machine software that virtualizes a new sub-machine on your existing operating system. On the one hand, this sub-machine is built on the operating system you are running, and it also has its own independent CPU, hard disk, memory and various hardware. Of course, these are all virtualized. It is worth mentioning that a virtual hard disk is actually a file on the parent machine, you can partition, format, and install the operating system without affecting the original system. The memory size and hard disk size used by the virtual machine can be adjusted according to your needs.

1. Download and install VMware

You can get the VMware installer from many software download websites. Here, I recommend the following two websites:

(1) VMware base camp www.VMware.com

(2) China Virtual Machine Forum www.VWware.cn

Note: The installation program can be divided into for Windows and for Linux. Download the correct version. My host is Windows Server. The downloaded installer is vmware-work-station1 4.5.2-8848.exe.

The installation of VMware is very simple. Please note that after installing VMware, you must first enter the information on the VMware website to obtain the 30-day trial registration code. If you do not want to purchase the official registration code 30 days later, you have to log on to the VMware website to obtain the serial number for the next month.

After VMware is started, its main interface is 1.


2. VMware Configuration

After VMware is installed, it can be used to create multiple virtual machines. Each time you create a new virtual machine, you will be asked to create a configuration file. This configuration file is actually equivalent to the "hardware configuration" of the new computer. In the configuration file, you can decide how to configure the virtual machine's hard disk, How much memory is, which operating system to run, and whether there is a network. To configure a Linux virtual machine, follow these steps.

(1) Select "New Virtual Machine" under the File menu to display the New Virtual Machine wizard, click "Next", and select "Typical" for Typical installation.

(2) Click "Next", select "Linux" from "Guest Operation System" on the operating System interface, and click the drop-down menu corresponding to Version to select a specific Linux Version, here we select "Red Hat LinuX ".

(3) Click "Next" to go to the installation directory selection page. The text box above this interface is the name of the system, keep the default value, the text box below needs to select the virtual machine operating system installation location.

(4) After selecting as needed, click "Next" to display the page for setting the VM memory size. Linux9.O requires at least 64 MB of memory in text mode and at least 128 MB in graphical mode. 192 MB is recommended. Select 192 MB here:

(5) Click "Next" to go to the network connection mode selection page. VMware has four network settings. In general, the Bridged mode makes virtual machines like an independent computer in the network, the most convenient and easy to use (for details about the differences between the four connection methods, refer to the relevant information of VMware ). Here, we select the Brided method.

(6) Click "Next" to go to the Virtual Disk setting page. There are three ways to choose from (Create a new virtual disk, Use an existing virtual disk, Use a physical disk). We recommend that you select "Create a new Virtual disk" for beginners ", it means creating a new virtual disk, which is only an independent file of host bu.

(7) set the disk size in "Next. Here, we use the default 4 GB.

(8) Click "Next" to go to the file storage path selection page.

On this page, you can click the Browse button. Here we use the default value and click "finish.

This completes the configuration of a virtual machine.

Ii. Installation of Linux in VMware

The above is equivalent to assembling a new computer. The next step is to install the operating system. Make preparations before installation: buy a set of Red Hat Linux 9.0 installation disks, a total of three. Or download the three ISO files required for installing Red Hat Linux 9.0. The following describes how to use an ISO image file for installation.

1. Install the first virtual Disc

(If you directly use a CD, you can skip this step and the subsequent steps

Step 5. Directly Insert the disc into the physical optical drive)

Select the Settings option under the VM menu, click CD-ROMl under the than Hardware tab, and select "Use ISO image" in the "connection" radio button group on the right ". Press "Browse" to select the first of the three disc files, and then press "OK ".

2. Start the VM.

Click the green start button on the toolbar or the start this virtual machine command in the screen display area, and then press "OK ". Red hat automatically enters the installation interface. First, check whether the installation is based on a graphical interface or a text interface. Press enter to select a graphical interface for installation, and then ask if you want to test the optical drive. In the VMware window, click the mouse (switch from Windows to VMware), press the TAB key on the disk, and then press the space.

Note: To switch from Windows to VMware, you only need to click the left button in the VMware window, and press Ctrl 10 Alt to return from VMware to Windows. Note that you must ensure that the cursor is in VMware before performing operations on the virtual machine. This is the easiest option for beginners to ignore.

3. Set partitions

Follow the prompts to select the installation language, keyboard, mouse, and installation type (similar to Windows, which will not be detailed here) and go to the disk partition page. The warning 2 is displayed, since the operation is performed on a virtual machine, you can select "yes.


In the next window, press "Next" by default, and the pop-up "you have selected to delete all partitions in the-F drive..." appears ......" Select Yes to go to the boot program loading interface.

4. Set the root password

On the boot loader loading page, click "Next ". After setting the system language and time zone, enter the root password setting interface. The root password here is equivalent to the system administrator password of Windows 2000. After the password is set, press "Next" and wait for the software package to be installed until a message about changing the CD is displayed.

5. Install the second and third ISO discs

The setting method is the same as 1, except that the second and third files are selected respectively. After reading the third disk, the system will ask whether to make the boot disk. This is based on your needs, and then the settings such as the video card, all the way to the default. Select "Exit" and restart the system in VMware.

6. Create a personal user account and password

After the restart, the system prompts you to create an individual account and password, which is equivalent to creating a new user in Windows.

7. other settings

Select the date and sound card, and then ask if you want to register. Select "No, I don't want to register my system". Next, ask if there is any additional installation. We will not install it here, and press "Forward" directly ". The system in VMware restarts again.

8. log on to the system

After startup. The system queries the user name and password.

Enter the user name and password set in step 6, or enter the user name "root" and the root password you set in Step 6.

Now, the Red Hat 9 interface is displayed, and the Linux installation is complete.

Iii. Installation of VMware tools

After installing Iinux, you also need to install VMware tools for this VM. This is equivalent to installing various drivers for Linux.

First, enter Linux as root, press CTRL + ALT to enter the master operating system, and click the VMware Tools Install sub-menu under the VM menu. In the displayed dialog box, click "Install". The cdrom dialog box containing the vmware-linux-toos.tar.gz file is displayed. Decompress the file and execute the Vmware-install.p1 file. The procedure is as follows:

(1)right-click the vmware-linux-tools.tar.gz file and select copy file ".

(2) Click the "next level" button in the figure two times in a row to return the current directory to the root directory and double-click/tmp to enter the/tmp directory. Right-click and select "paste file" to copy the compressed file to the/tmp directory.

(3) Right-click the Vmware-linux tools.tar.gz file under the/tmp directory and select "decompress to subfolders ".

(4) enter the decompressed directory to run the installation command Vmware-install.pl.

Method: change the switch key of VM and host from Ctrl x Alt by default to Ctrl x Shift x Alt (click the VM menu Edit → p r e n c e s → h o t k e y s) press Ctrl ten Alt ten F (1-6) to switch to text mode, enter root after Local Host Login, and then enter the root Password to log on as root, run cd/tmp/vmware-tools-distrib to enter the decompressed directory and enter. /vmwareinstall. press enter after p1.

After Vmware-insall is run, restart Linux to see the beautiful Linux GUI. So far, the entire installation process has ended.
