VSphere WEB Client is a common, browser-based, VMware management tool for busy administrators who can monitor and manage the VMware infrastructure. Before you can get rid of the vsphere client under the Windows platform, you need to install and configure the Web client component in the background first.

To set up the vsphere Web client on the server side, ensure that the network port 9443 between the Web client and the vcenter server is open. The port is the default port, but you can set it to any other port you choose.

Next, make sure that you have administrator-level permissions on the vcenter server before you install the Web client software. The Web client is located on the same installation CD as the Vcenter server Installer, which is referred to as the VMware vSphere Web client. You can install the vsphere Web Client on vcenter Server or any other server that is connected to the network. This article installs the Web client software directly on the vcenter server.

After you install the vsphere Web client, you can access the Vsphere Web Client Management tool by entering https://localhost:<9443 in the browser address bar or other ports you choose >/admin-app/. Next, register Vcenter Server in the vsphere Web client. Click Register vcenter Server to continue to the next step.

Next you need to enter the Vcenter server name or IP address, user name, and password. Be sure to use an account that has administrator privileges. If you need to register another vcenter Server, repeat this task.

Unless you are using link mode, the Web client can only connect to one vcenter Server at a time. Also, be aware that by removing the registered Vcenter server from the Web client, you cannot access the Vcenter server through the Web client.

Using the browser-based vsphere Web Client

After you install the server side, you can use the Web client to access the Vcenter server or the ESXi host.

To access the Web client and log in to Vcenter Server, enter the following address https://(webclient-hostname) (port)/vsphere-client/on the browser.

Please note the prompt to download the client integration plugin. You can choose to log in directly to Vcenter server or install the plugin.

As shown in the successful login, you will see a page that identifies the various menus and related columns of the browser-based Web client. In the upper-right corner of the page, you can choose not to display the page when you start it.

Pay special attention to the Start button that looks like the inverted triangle at the top of the interface. This button allows you to select different VMware management applications, such as vcenter management, lookup, monitoring: Task console, event console, and System Management: plug-in management. When you select a different VMware management app, the menu title will update to show the current options.
