IPv6 Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMPv6) for IPv6 Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMPv6) is in RFC 2463 [that is, "Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMPv6) required IPv6 standards defined in for the Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) Specification. With ICMPv6, hosts and routers that use IPv6 communication can report errors and send simple echo messages. The ICMPv6 Protocol also provides a framework for the following: multicast listener discovery (MLD) MLD is a series of three ICMPv6 messages that replace IPv4's "Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) "version 2 manages subnet multicast members. Neighbor Discovery (ND) "Neighbor Discovery" is a series of five ICMPv6 messages used to manage the communication between nodes on the link. "Neighbor Discovery" replaces "ip Resolution Protocol" (ARP), "ICMPv4 Router Discovery", and "ICMPv4 redirection" messages, and provides other functions. When an IPv6 packet cannot reach its target, the ICMPv6 message is automatically sent. ICMPv6 messages can be encapsulated and sent as the effective load of IPv6 packets, as shown in. Different types of ICMPv6 messages are identified in the ICMPv6 header. Because ICMPv6 messages are carried in IPv6 packets, they are not reliable. The following table lists and describes ICMPv6 messages that are not related to MLD or ND. The ICMPv6 Message description cannot access the target error message. The notification sender host cannot send data packets. If the packet is too large, the error message is sent to the host, and the packet is too large to be forwarded. Timeout error message: indicates the sending host. The "Hop limit" of IPv6 packets has expired. Parameter error message: notifies the sending host that an error occurs when processing the IPv6 Header or IPv6 extended header. The echo request is used to determine whether an IPv6 node is available on the network. The echo reply is used to reply to the information message of the "ICMPv6 echo request" message. You can use the ping6 command to send the ICMPv6 echo request message and record the message that receives the ICMPv6 echo response. Ping can detect network or host communication faults and solve common IPv6 connection problems. You can use the tracert6 command to send an ICMPv6 echo request message together with the value continuously added in the "Hop limit" field. Tracert tracks and displays the path between the source and target of IPv6 packets, which can solve common IPv6 Routing Problems.
