The purpose of configuration management is to ensure the integrity and traceability of configuration items by executing version control, change control, and other procedures and using configuration management software.

Configuration Management is an effective protection of work results.

All work results included in the scope of configuration management are collectively referred to as configuration items (comfiguration item, CI). There are two main types of configuration items:

A baseline consists of a set of configuration items that constitute a relatively stable logical entity. The configuration items in the baseline are "Frozen" and cannot be modified by anyone. A baseline usually corresponds to a milestone in the development process (milestone). A product can have multiple or only one baseline. The baseline delivered to the customer is usually called a "release", and the baseline for internal development becomes a "build ".

The purpose of version control is to save all versions of a configuration item according to certain rules to avoid version loss or confusion, and to quickly and accurately find any version of the configuration item.

The purpose of the change control is to make the configuration item randomly modified and cause confusion. When the configuration item is in the "officially released" or "Frozen" status, no one can modify it at will, you must follow the rules "Application-approval-change execution-review-end.
