The LAN-free/Server-less backup solution increases explosively with the amount of information, the traditional network and server connection backup data protection methods cannot meet the user's increasing high-capacity, high-density, high-speed and high-reliability data backup requirements. A large amount of system data is backed up through the user's network, making network bandwidth an insurmountable bottleneck. 7x24 system operation requirements make the data backup window smaller and smaller, while the increasing data size requires a larger data window. The emergence of a storage area network (SAN) meets this requirement. San separates storage devices from the server to achieve the sharing of storage devices and the separation of storage data channels from the user network, which lays the foundation for LAN-free/Server-less data backup.

What is lan-free backup?

Lan-free backup isolates data backup from the traditional data network so that the backup data streams do not pass through the traditional Ethernet network, instead, the data is first transferred to the server from the shared disk through the SAN storage network, and then the server backs up the data to the tape library, thus easing the load on the Ethernet.

Benefits of LAN-free backup

L high-performance data backup-the application of optical fiber technology in the SAN storage area network greatly improves the data transmission rate, and the transmission rate can reach 200 m/sec in full-duplex transmission mode, in this way, the backup performance of the system is greatly improved.

L flexible scalability-in the SAN storage network, the system has good scalability. The entire network design adopts modularity and swap replacement, so that the system can meet unlimited storage backup requirements.

L centralized management of data backup-the SAN storage architecture enables centralized data backup from the original data islands to datasets.

L liberation of the first network-in traditional network backup, especially when more and more data needs to be backed up, a large amount of data backup needs to occupy a large amount of Ethernet bandwidth, making the network bandwidth itself increasingly tight. The LAN-free backup solves our urgent needs.

L cost reduction-the real sharing of storage devices greatly reduces investment in storage devices and costs.

What is server-less backup?

As its name implies, it means to bypass the backup of the server. Specifically, when performing the backup operation, the backup data is directly written from the disk to the tape, the lan network and Application Server are unaffected throughout the process. This frees network loads and application servers from backups. This technology is the product of SAN technology.

Why is there a serverless backup?

The storage area network (SAN) provides obvious benefits for the computer environment. The use of Optical Fiber Channel San for business applications avoids the transmission of large data blocks in traditional networks. San improves network performance by taking on the important task of data transmission, this makes storage devices more efficient and provides higher fault tolerance and faster backup and recovery capabilities.

1. San-based backup

The importance of backing up data is well known and backup policies are required. In the past, backups took up idle network time. With the emergence of San, the data transmitted to the backup device can no longer pass through the network. However, when the backup operation moves data from the source to the target in the San, the server still needs to manage transmission and perform activation operations, so the server itself becomes a bottleneck, this is because data must first be moved from the SAN disk to the server memory, and then from the server memory to the tape drive on the San.

In addition, the management of these transmitted data affects the server's use of all resources for other important tasks, such as running application software and processing data, although the backup window is not as limited as it was before using san, it is still not enough. Backup operations must be performed within a period of time that does not affect the user and business processing on the server.

2. bypass the server

If the network server can be bypassed, what if the data on the disk can be directly transmitted to the tape drive through San? If you move the data mobile management function from the server to the backup device itself, the cost will be significantly reduced:

N because the server bottleneck does not exist, the backup will be faster.

N dedicated backup servers are omitted.

N. The server that backs up and files can use all its capabilities for business processing.

N because data is directly sent to tape devices without limits on server performance, the speed of the tape drive is optimized.

N can be backed up at any time without affecting the user's network. It can be backed up 7x24 hours a day.

N the benefits of serverless backup are embodied in data recovery. Because the network "snapshot" is more convenient to execute, the backup tape can contain the latest data, so that the recovery is faster and less work is required.

Server-less Backup implementation

At present, with the development of computer technology, server-less backup methods are roughly summarized into two types: the first is the most traditional method, this method specifies a dedicated backup server in the entire backup domain for dedicated backup, and must be used with some third-party software to implement server-less backup. For example, the fastresync function of Veritas Volume Manager. The second is to use some devices in the San for data management and transmission. For example, the San switch and the tape library drive can only be implemented by corresponding agents, but they are named differently by different manufacturers. For example, the switch manufacturer may be more datamover, but the tape library manufacturer is called E-copy. In general, the technical principles are consistent.

The principles of the above two methods are roughly as follows: In the first method, use the fastresync function of Veritas Volume Manager to implement data mirroring to ensure real-time data synchronization between the work disk and the image disk, when data needs to be backed up, volume manager automatically mounts the image disk to the backup server. At this time, the backup server executes the data managed and copied in the backup, therefore, server-less data is backed up. Similarly, after the backup is complete, the image disk is automatically synchronized with the work disk of the application server. The second method, however, is to use the SCSI extension COPY Command, as described in the current SCSI-3 specification. The extended Copy command enables a switch or tape drive to act as the SCSI initiator so that it can establish a connection to the target disk and issue read, write, and other SCSI commands to the disk. Vswitches and tape drives can be used to "move data" on behalf of servers. During backup, the tape drive receives data directly from the disk and writes data to the disk during recovery, obtain related status information from the disk.

Conclusion: We provide unlimited Lan-free/Server-less performance backup solutions for all walks of life using the industry's advanced and mature technologies, in terms of backup software, we use advanced Veritas master-level backup software in the United States, in terms of hardware, brocade, McDATA, STK, and other devices are used to establish a stable, high-performance, high-availability and easy-to-manage SAN storage information architecture to achieve Unlimited storage and backup solutions.
