Article Title: Microsoft CFO lists the five major threats to Linux, ranking second in the competition. Linux is a technology channel of the IT lab in China. Includes basic categories such as desktop applications, Linux system management, kernel research, embedded systems, and open source.
Microsoft attaches great importance to the threat that a Linux operating system with open source code poses to Windows systems on July 15, (Beijing time, among the five major risks Microsoft faces recently announced by Microsoft's chief financial officer John connos, Linux ranks second in the ranking, second only to the risks brought about by deteriorating economic conditions.

"The overall economic environment is the number one risk, while Linux and other non-commercial software are the second risk," Conos said when talking about the five risks ." Kanos said that the other three major risks are how to increase the user base while the expenditure shrinks in sequence,

Judicial litigation and how to efficiently implement operation plans at multiple levels.

"I'm a little surprised that Microsoft regards Linux as the second risk, because I think it may be better to increase the user base in the case of a contraction in expenditure than in Linux, but considering the risks brought by Linux, it is also a matter of how to increase the user base in the case of a contraction in expenditure, moreover, it is more representative, so it is reasonable for Microsoft to list Linux in the second place separately."

"Some users may use Linux for the same reason as others are still using Windows 2000 or Office 97, that is, Linux is enough for them to do their work," he said, so there is no need to change."

In recent months, Microsoft has been making a high profile on how it attaches importance to threats from open source software. Microsoft's chairman of the board, Bill Gates, said in February that he attaches great importance to the threat that Linux poses to Microsoft, saying that the Linux system is "competing with windows and has become deeply rooted in the hearts of the people ". In February June, Microsoft CEO Steve barmo also sent an email to all Microsoft employees, saying that open source products are a major competitive threat to Microsoft.

Later, Microsoft stepped up its lobbying efforts to persuade potential European customers to believe that they should choose Microsoft products away from Linux. However, even though Balmo personally intervened in winning more contracts in Munich, Germany, but Linux eventually won.

"When senior executives like Balmo are aware of the huge losses caused by Linux to Microsoft, Linux will naturally attract the high attention of Microsoft," he said ." Cili said that Microsoft has taken some practical measures to address Linux threats, including modifications to its Windows CE operating system.

In the spring of this year, Microsoft lowered the price of Windows CE and completely disclosed its embedded operating system to developers, this allows developers to not only browse and modify CE for the first time, but also sell products that integrate custom code. "I think Windows CE is the main embodiment of Microsoft's attempt to find a way to respond to Linux threats in the best way ."

He also pointed out that Microsoft's so-called shared source code project is also designed to address the threat of Linux, which allows policy customers to browse its Windows operating system, it opened the door for some large commercial customers to browse the Windows system. Although there is a big difference between shared source code and open source code, Cili said, it at least indicates that Microsoft may be moving towards open source code.

If Microsoft is really upset about Linux, the recent data published by a server monitoring company in England can comfort Microsoft. The company named NetCraft said that Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows Server 2003, has begun to erode the Linux market. The 2003 growth of Windows Server 5% was achieved by crowding out the Linux share, more than 8000 systems have switched from open source products to Windows Server 2003.

But Cili also said that the server market does not really reflect the overall competition between Microsoft and Linux. He said: "People have underestimated the strength of Linux in the desktop field, and everyone thinks that the server market is all, however, they would be surprised to learn about the rapid increase in the threat of Linux in the desktop field." Cili joked that if a correct evaluation of Linux's power in the desktop field is made, Microsoft may list Linux as the number one, not the second threat.
