At Microsoft's annual Mobile and embedded developers conference, Microsoft announced the release of the Windows CE 6 beta version. This software is the next generation of Microsoft's industry-leading and real-time software. It is mainly used to build customized operating systems for devices, such: IP set-top boxes, devices based on GPS, industrial automation, and medical devices. With the re-designed operating system (OS) kernel architecture, enhanced concurrent processing capabilities, and a new integrated toolkit, Windows CE 6 will help device manufacturers make superior devices faster, and meet a series of high-performance application fields.

Currently, it has become a plug-in for Visual Studio 2005. Windows CE 6 provides a more integrated embedded development environment. Now, developers can use a single and familiar tool to quickly develop operating systems and applications, thus reducing the time to market and effectively reducing development costs. With Visual Studio 2005, Microsoft is helping more than 7 million of developers around the world use their existing tools and skills to create innovative and excellent embedded devices.

The re-designed operating system kernel architecture supports concurrent processing from 32 to 32,000 processors. Each processor runs in 2 GB virtual memory address space, greatly improving the concurrent processing capability. This allows developers to integrate a large number of more complex applications into more intelligent devices than ever before, so as to provide high-performance multimedia, Web Services and wireless network connection applications. Windows CE 6 is compatible with most of the features and functions of the previous generation of Windows CE, allowing device manufacturers to continue using previously developed customer interfaces, applications, middleware, and drivers, without increasing development costs.

Windows CE 6 enhances the sharing success model and is built on Microsoft's "Shared Source Code Plan", enabling developers to gain a wide range of millions of Windows CE source code. Developers and device manufacturers have the right to modify and re-distribute custom components based on Windows CE products, and retain the intellectual property rights of the modified components. The Shared Source Code license also includes a flexible template for the original device manufacturer to create a unique, Custom User Interface for its devices to have a greater advantage. *
