Mobile Internet CDN Based on SDN and ICN

In recent years, the transmission of multimedia content has become a significant trend in the development of mobile communication, and mobile multimedia traffic will increase by 1000 times in the next 10 years has become a consensus. However, the current mobile communication network has two problems:

(1) to access mobile content, end-to-end connections must be established. The lack of flexibility and scalability restricts the efficient transmission of massive content by the mobile communication network;

(2) In the traditional pipeline-based business model, mobile operators will not increase their incomes with the increase of network traffic.

To address these challenges, the Institute of wireless communication technology of Jiaotong University once proposed the concept of computing communication. By introducing content and Network Diversity and device diversity, this problem was solved from a new dimension. To this end, a new network architecture is required to ensure effective content transmission and coordinate the interests between content providers and mobile operators, so as to provide users with a better experience, in this case, the architecture is network intelligence.

Based on the information-centric network ICN (a next-generation revolutionary Internet solution) architecture, network intelligence decouples content from its source node, giving personalized multimedia content transmission greater freedom.

The core idea of OTT content providers is to select an appropriate service implementation method among multiple mobile operators based on their own needs, rather than handing over content distribution tasks to a single mobile operator.

The specific implementation is that OTT content providers provide mobile operators with specific requirements on content push. Mobile operators compete to execute a content distribution task by providing different SLA. OTT content providers can select one or more of the most appropriate mobile operators to deliver content based on user requests and their own conditions.

In the framework of network intelligence, users need to inform OTT content providers of their current available resources. By summarizing user information, OTT content providers can better understand users' preferences and geographical distribution, and provide descriptions of corresponding content transmission tasks.

From the perspective of mobile operators, Software Defined Network (SDN) facilitates more efficient control and scheduling of network resources, and makes it possible to implement a smart network architecture.

Imagine the potential application scenarios of network intelligence: OTT content providers can embed personalized ads that suit users' preferences in a popular video with audio that suits the language of the local user, each content component (including video, audio, and personalized advertisements) can be assigned a name to become a named data object, these objects can be sent to users through different transmission channels provided by mobile operators and finally combined to present personalized and complete content according to different user needs.

For example, OTT content providers need to push 5 types of modular content on their servers. After negotiation with mobile operators, each type of content is cached in different locations on the network, the selection of these locations is based on the distribution of user requests and content popularity. On the user end, these modular contents will be re-combined for use by users.

Because ICN is introduced, content can be cached in the network according to popularity, and content access is more concentrated on the network edge, alleviating the network overhead of the core network and OTT content providers. The content is modularized on the OTT content provider, making content diversity possible.

At the same time, the content transmission policy is based on the negotiation between OTT content providers and mobile carriers. It not only integrates the information provided by OTT content providers regarding the distribution of content requests and user requirements, the network resources provided by mobile operators are also used as efficiently as possible to achieve optimal resource configuration.

On the user side, the requested content is pushed through multiple channels provided by different mobile carriers, which improves the content push rate and the use of access network bandwidth, make limited resources play a greater role as much as possible.
