MySQL 5.5 read/write performance is more than three times higher than 5.1

With the release of MySQL 5.5, Oracle began to promote the Web application function of this open source database, while its Oracle database is mainly for enterprise-level applications.

On Wednesday, the company released version 5.5 of the open-source MySQL database, which was the first time Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems and obtained MySQL to upgrade the software. Currently, Oracle is in control of the two main application fields of relational database systems. It must clearly differentiate the products to be deployed in the enterprise.

"For Web-based applications, Custom Department-level applications and embedded applications, MySQL is a suitable database," said Kumar. It mainly targets high-end applications: enterprise resource planning, customer relationship management, online transaction processing, large data warehouses, and intelligent business applications ."

Kumar said that this does not mean that you cannot use Oracle databases in Web applications, but from a historical perspective, MySQL is more widely used in Web applications. She mentioned that MySQL is part of the LAMP (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP/Python/Perl) architecture. When deploying a Web site or Web application, this is a widely used architecture. "In the Web-based application field, it was very successful," she said ."

Tomas Ulin, vice president of MySQL engineering, said that in the Web field, another consideration for choosing MySQL rather than Oracle is personnel. In many cases, a LAMP (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP/Python/Perl) Administrator is more familiar with MySQL than Oracle databases. He said: "It can be seen from the fact that all real developers use MySQL, MySQL is easier to use ."

In terms of performance, this software is no longer as slow as its previous version to the extreme when dealing with a large number of concurrent connections. This is an encouraging improvement for Web servers that can withstand 1000 connections at a time. When a large number of server cores are added (more than four cores), this software can achieve additional performance improvement, which was not possible in the past.

The general performance has also been improved. Oracle said that, according to internal standards, on Linux, the read/write speed of MySQL 5.5 is 5.1 higher than that of MySQL 360%. On Windows Server, the performance has been improved by more than 1500%. Ulin said: "MySQL 5.5 has a higher throughput ."

In terms of replication, this software now supports replication of semi-synchronous. In the past, only asynchronous replication is supported, which means that when new data is input to the original database, the backup copy of the database cannot be updated immediately.

"If you submit something on the master server, you cannot determine when the slave server will receive the updates," Ulin said ." Use replication to copy data to the backup database, applications that are submitting data to the database will not receive confirmation information that the data has been input.
