MySQL Spatial data type explanation

MySQL has a data type that corresponds to the OpenGIS class. Some types can only hold a single geometric value:

· GEOMETRY

· Point

· LINESTRING

· POLYGON

Geometry can save any type of geometric value. Other single value types point, linestring, and polygon can only hold values for a particular geometric type.

Other data types can hold multiple values:

· Multipoint

· Multilinestring

· Multipolygon

· GeometryCollection

GeometryCollection can save collections of objects of any type. For other collection types, multipoint, multilinestring, Multipolygon, and geometrycollection are restricted to members of a collection that have a particular geometry type.
