1. About SQL Ser ver high Availability (HA) environments

SQL Server Intelligent Policies support the following types of SQL Server HA environments:sql server clusters and Log-shi Pping. For log-shipping, the same caveats as for legacy SQL Server policies.

SQL Server legacy Policies support the following types of SQL Server HA Environments:alwayson availability Groups?, SQL S erver clusters, database mirroring, and log-shipping.

For complete descriptions of these HA solutions refer to SQL Server Books Online. Each solution synchronizes one or more copies of selected databases on alternate SQL Server installations. A manual or an automatic failover results in continued access for mission critical database applications.

2. Configure a backup of the clustered SQL Server instance (SQL Server intelligence Policy)

This procedure describes how to protect a SQL Server cluster instance by using SQL Server Smart policy. Follow these steps after you create the virtual SQL Server (virtualserver). You must do the following on either the primary server or the NetBackup remote client console that acts as the primary server.

If you have a SQL Server cluster that contains multiple NICs, you must follow a different procedure.

When you have multiple NICs (SQL Server Intelligence Policies), See Configure a backup of a SQL Server cluster .

To configure a backup of a clustered SQL Server instance (SQL Server intelligence Policy)

  1. Open the NetBackup management console.
  2. Create a policy (for example, Virtsqlpolicy).
  3. in the " Properties tab, configure the following:
    • Select Ms-sql-server The policy type.

    • Specifies the storage unit. If you are using a virtual media server, specify the storage unit that belongs to the virtual media server.

  4. in the " instances and Databases tab, select Protect Instance.

See Add an instance to a policy (SQL Server smart Policy).

  5. Add the instance or database you want to protect.
  6. For clustered instances, the host name is the virtual name of the SQL Server cluster.

  7. Add additional policy information as follows:

    • Add a timesheet.

    • Optionally , select the specific filegroup or file that you want to back up. By default, NetBackup backs up the entire database.

    • Optionally, change any adjustment parameters.

see about tuning Parameters for SQL Server Backups .

  8. Map the virtual name of the SQL Server cluster to each node in the cluster.

On The primary server, " These mappings are configured in the Distributed Application Restore Mappings Host Properties .

See Configure mappings to restore a distributed application, cluster, or virtual machine .

  9. Configure the SQL Server host in your environment Map host name .

Configure this property in host management on the primary server.

See View Autodiscover mappings in host management .

3. Configure a backup of the clustered SQL Server instance (legacy SQL Server Policy)

This procedure describes how to protect a SQL Server cluster instance by using an old policy that uses batch files and clients. Follow these steps after you create the virtual SQL Server (virtualserver). You must do the following on either the primary server or the NetBackup remote client console that acts as the primary server.

If you have a SQL Server cluster that contains multiple NICs, you must follow a different procedure.

If you have multiple NICs (Legacy SQL Server policies), See Configure a backup of a SQL Server cluster .

To configure a backup of a clustered SQL Server instance

  1. Open the NetBackup management console.
  2. Create a policy (for example, Virtsqlpolicy).
  3. in the " Properties tab, configure the following:
  4. Select Ms-sql-server The policy type.
  5. Specifies the storage unit. If you are using a virtual media server, specify the storage unit that belongs to the virtual media server.
  6. in the " instances and Databases tab, select client to use for the batch file .
  7. in the " Schedule tab, add the automatic backup schedule.
  8. in the " Client tab, add the virtual SQL Server name (virtualserver).
  9. in the " Backup Selection tab, add one or more script names (batch files).
  10. Map the virtual name of the SQL Server cluster to each node in the cluster.

On The primary server, " These mappings are configured in the Distributed Application Restore Mappings Host Properties .

See Configure mappings to restore a distributed application, cluster, or virtual machine .

  11. Configure the SQL Server host in your environment Map host name .
