Use giant data packets

The technology of giant data packets improves the network performance. switches and network interface cards supporting giant data packets can process data packets with a maximum length of over IEEE (1.5 k bits, some devices support data packets with a length of more than 9 KB bits, but there is no uniform standard for the length of giant data packets. Industry insiders pointed out that for high-speed Ethernet such as gibit and 10G networks, the use of giant packet technology is more effective, including 3Com, Cisco, many vendors such as Extreme Networks have provided products that support this router technology. The network using this router technology needs to set the switch to the giant packet mode, and must use the same manufacturer's product. Otherwise, data packet loss or decomposition may occur. At the same time, experts suggest that the use of the giant data packet technology should be limited, such as using this router technology only on network connections such as Server File Transfer or backup work to the server.

Check Network Connections

The decrease in network performance may be caused by simple physical connection problems, but the network administrator cannot ignore these problems, because the damage to the cable or connector may only lead to the loss of data packets and will not completely paralyze the network, therefore, such problems are more concealed. Network sniffer can be used to detect abnormal data packet retransmission, which is often a symptom of cable problems. Environmental factors may also cause a decline in network performance, such as cables near an elevator or heating system, which may be affected by electromagnetic fields when transmitting data. Experts recommend that you add protective casings to cables in such an environment and upgrade all cables in the network to Category 5 or Category 6 cables.

Full Duplex Mode

When both ends of the network connection are in full duplex mode, the performance is the highest, and the network adapter on the PC is easily set to half duplex mode by the user unintentionally or intentionally through the software. Monitoring the connection speed is important to check whether the duplex settings of the two ports match. Experts suggest using a software named Multi-router Traffic Grapher to monitor the performance of network connections to ensure that full duplex settings are enabled on both ends.

Use Layer 3 Switching

One way to improve network performance is to implement Layer 3 switching on a switch connected to a desktop machine. Many vswitches provide IP routing capabilities and Layer-3 switching QoS for LAN edge switches. With Layer 3 switching capability, the switch will not send each packet to the router. For example, two nodes in different virtual LAN are connected to the same switch, layer 3 edge switches can route the communication services between the two nodes.

Add route control

Implement route control or route optimization on sites with more than one Internet connection. This is a configuration called Multi-host. The routing control device of the site connects to the network as the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). BGP is a routing mechanism used to determine which Internet connection is used. This option is determined based on which connection will use the minimum number of router hops to reach the destination. Routing control can select the optimal route based on the factors affecting the performance and price, which is better than BGP.

Data Packet Shaping

The data packet shapers put network communication services into the queue according to their importance. For example, key applications and latency-sensitive applications obtain higher priority. This can be done by limiting the bandwidth occupied by some applications or blocking some applications.

Use compression technology

Placement of compression equipment on sites connected to both ends of the WAN to scan the communication service. The principle is to replace the repeated mode with a shorter mode to reduce the number of bytes that need to be transmitted over the WAN, in this way, we can make full use of the limited bandwidth. In addition, with the SSL Acceleration Program, you can use the router technology to reduce the number of bytes of the content of the transmitted webpage and remove the data not required to reconstruct the webpage to accelerate the transmission of SSL over the Internet, it can also reduce the number of TCP connection requests to be processed by the application server.
