Nfs unix and Windows Settings

When we set NFS for UNIX and Windows, the first thing we need to change is the firewall settings. Let's take a closer look at the settings here. In any network connected to the Internet, the firewall is the first line of defense. generally, the optimal solution is to set a hardware-based or dedicated firewall at the gateway to protect the entire network. the sub-optimal solution is to use a local Firewall, such as Zone Alarm or Tiny Firewall.

However, even with a firewall, you may need to restrict some network data to your computer. for example, you may be concerned with local network data and Internet network data. blocking the local network data is actually very easy. You only need to set a filter on your computer.

In Windows 2000, you can specify some ports to receive data from the network. For example, you can restrict all ports except ports 80 HTTP), 110POP3) and 25 SMTP.

To configure a filter on a computer, follow these steps:

1. Open the network and dial-up connection folders in the control panel, right-click the network interface, and select Properties.

2. Click TCP/IP, select properties, and click Advanced.

3. Go to the option page, select TCP/IP filter, and click Properties.

4. In the TCP/IP filter dialog box, select enable TCP/IP filter.

5. In the TCP port, UDP port, and IP protocol area, add the port you want to allow and click OK.

6. Close the dialog box.

Using NFS to integrate Windows and UNIX systems

Windows Service for UNIXSFU) is an attachment to Windows 2000 Server. It provides several components to provide integration between Windows and UNIX/Linux systems. one SFU component is Network File System NFS. It provides Client, Server, and Gateway components that support file sharing between Windows and UNIX-based systems.

The Client component allows Windows users to access shared files on UNIX-based NFS servers. the Server component displays files shared by the NFS file system in Windows so that they can be used by NFS customers in UNIX and Windows environments.

Installing and managing an NFS client on a Windows Workstation is a solution to access NFS sharing on UNIX servers, but a better solution is to use the Gateway component of Windows 2000 NFS. the Gateway component allows Windows 2000 Server to be a Gateway shared by NFS on a UNIX host.

For customers, it seems that these shares are on Windows systems. because Windows customers can access Windows servers without additional client software, these clients can access NFS sharing on remote UNIX hosts without the need for NFS client software. eliminates the need for NFS client software to simplify network and Client Management.
