Partitioning scheme: Fdisk

With the emergence of third-party partition management software, Fdisk has already been put into the cold Palace. In fact, it is still very useful in some aspects, the author has encountered such a phenomenon many times: after a third-party partition management software error, use the "Fdisk/mbr" command to restore too many hard disks. Similarly, after Windows Server 2003 is installed, Fdisk can run properly. The following uses a case to illustrate its special role in partition management.

Case 1: A computer enthusiast divides the hard disk into three primary partitions, which are Sys98, SysXP, and Sys2k3. The latter two are in NTFS format, windows 98, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 are installed respectively. When the system is installed in one partition, the other two primary partitions are hidden, so that the installed Multiple systems are completely independent. There is no boot menu for the traditional multi-system installation at startup (first install Windows 98, and then install Windows XP or Windows 2003 under Windows 98). The startup method is as follows: activate a primary partition (hiding the other two primary partitions at the same time) and start it under the operating system of the partition. How to Use Fdisk for selective startup?

Solution: Use the Windows 98 boot disk to boot the computer to DOS and enter the "Fdisk" command. If you select "Set active partition" under the main menu, you can see the interface. Since Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are in NTFS format, they are displayed as "Non-DOS" in the figure ". Enter 1, 2, and 3 respectively to make the corresponding partition active (the "Staus" field value of the active partition is A). restart the computer to enter the corresponding operating system.

Note: ① The volume label of the NTFS format partition cannot be displayed here, and the partition can only be distinguished from the order or capacity when you create the partition. However, even if you select the wrong partition, it will not have a negative impact on the disk partition or data, but it will be started to the operating system you do not want, just select again. ② When using this method, an error may occur -- for example, after activating the 2nd Primary partition in Windows 98, the original primary partition may not be hidden, an error is reported at startup. If this problem occurs, you can use other partition management tools to hide the original primary partition.

Case 2: Can Fdisk adjust partitions without interrupting data?

The answer is yes. To help you understand this problem, let's first look at how the partition magician works: If you only perform one operation under the partition Magician: there is free space in the area close to the extended partition, if you want to scale up a primary partition that is close to the extended partition. However, the partition magician will display "2 Operations perding", that is, the two-step operation is actually completed in two steps of the partition. This is the reason why the number of operation steps is different from the number of display in the partition magician.

This principle is also available on Fdisk.

For example, the original hard disk contains three logical partitions: D, E, and F. Now, you need to combine the partitions E and F into one logical partition without damaging any data.

Method: First, copy the data in the E and F partitions to the D partitions.

Second, delete partitions E and F.

Finally, select create logical partition under Fdisk. If the default value is used, the space in all extended partitions will be created as a logical partition. Of course, you can manually enter the capacity to create multiple logical partitions.

As you can see, this task was completed after several steps.

Note: If the hard disk has multiple primary partitions, the capacity can be adjusted in several primary partitions, but the free space of the primary and extended partitions cannot be adjusted to the other partition. Even the partition magician must complete the process in multiple steps.

Fdisk can also adjust the space between the primary partition and the logical partition. The basic idea is the same, but there must be two or more primary partitions, in addition, you must delete the extended partition. However, the steps are very cumbersome, and they are used to drill the corners of the horns. They do not have much practical significance.
