In fact, we can upgrade the early ADSL modem equipment, so that it has the routing function. However, not any ADSL modem devices support the "soft upgrade", such as the USB interface can not be upgraded, and the network card connected to the RJ-45 interface devices can be properly upgraded.

To upgrade the ADSL modem equipment is to change the firmware of the data inside the device, modify its operating mode to the routing mode, and then refresh and save the data. Because of the production of ADSL modem equipment manufacturers to provide different upgrade points, so the method of upgrading is also focused on, the author can only general upgrade steps to do some simple generalization, for different manufacturers of equipment upgrades, please refer to the specific product upgrade instructions:

1, carefully check your modem bottom nameplate number and the manufacturer's Web site to explain the product number can be upgraded is consistent. After the confirmation of their own equipment can be upgraded, and then to the corresponding website to download the upgrade software;

2, modify the IP address of the network card connected to modem, set it to 168.0.0.1, and the subnet mask of the network card is 255.255.255.0;

3, then set up a simple FTP server, while the FTP server's network IP address and network IP Address Card set to the same, that is 168.0.0.1. and start the anonymous username, the password is set to null. Set up the folder where the downloaded upgrade software resides for the user to access the root folder;

4, click "Start → run", enter Telnet 168.0.0.1. You can then enter the previously set FTP username, password, and file name of the software in the login interface, and you will be able to answer "Yes" when the screen shows whether you want to update the firmware; The modem can be restarted in a few minutes;

5, execute the telnet 168.0.0.1 command again, in order to log in to modem. In the login prompt interface, use the show command to view the current modem's  bank Ⅲ Gray  nested ω 臡 odem new symbol appears on the display screen, the firmware content has been successfully upgraded;

6, to this end, we use the ADSL modem equipment has been equipped with the routing function; to manage this simple "router", you can open a Web page dedicated to managing the routing function when you open IE browser and enter 168.0.0.1 in the browser's address bar.

7, in this interface, you can ADSL modem equipment working mode set to "Router", and then restart the ADSL modem equipment; Again into the management of the routing function of the Web page, your ADSL username and password input, and then select "PPPoE" Connection mode, set all the relevant parameters, you can unplug the modem power cord, and then reconnect, so that the modem to start again;

8, back to the ADSL modem equipment directly connected to the computer system, the right mouse click on the Desktop Network Places, select the Properties command. In the Network Properties dialog box that appears later, select the TCP/IP protocol. Click the Properties button in the interface to open the settings interface, set the IP address of the local computer to automatically obtain, set the gateway address to 168.0.0.1, and then set the corresponding DNS server to the corresponding ISP's DNS server IP address.
